Cpu upgrade options.

Hi everyone im new to this forum, i had my m1710 for a while now and i feel like its time to upgrade and i got my hands on almost a brand new intel x9000 processor.

Since its a 965 chipset it has to support that CPU but there isn't much information about that in the web.

I also got a corsair x32 ssd and a set of 4gb ddr2-800. (got the bundle for 150bucks).

Now my GPU needs a replacement. (i was thinking on the HD5 series of ATI). Im Not sure about that because there is more than one generation apart so they might be different connections each.

Please advise on the cpu upgrade and the gpu replacement.

The system should take any 800 MHz Socket P CPU.

There is no ATI video card made for this system other than the X1400. The only options other than that are the nVidia 7900 and 7950 - nothing else was made to fit the proprietary video socket.

Wow thanks that saved me allot of headace. I aslo read that the motherboard will downclock any 800mhz ram to 667. Why is that? isnt there an option to change the divider on the fsb to make the ram work at 800mhz? i believe that with the new modules being produced in a more efficient manufacturing process and making the chips more power efficient+cooler the modules shouldn't really overheat much.

Is nvidia's series 7 is the only option for upgrading?

The chipset in this system cannot run the memory bus over 667  MHz - for that you need the next generation system (the Montevina) which has support for that.

Did the m1710 ever came with that platform? i know that the calpella platform is for the i3/i5/i7 processors.

I was just wondering if the m1710 can support the x9000 at 800FSB wil it support the x9100 at 1066FSB?

If i install the x9100 that has the 1066 fsb will the system boot? Will the system downclock the cpu to 800fsb? will it will be overclockable to the original 1066 while keeping the multiplier at stock?

Thanks in advance

The M1710 never came with anything other than the 965 chipset - ONLY Socket P CPUs on 800 or lower bus speed will work.  A 1066 MHz CPU will simply not boot in the M1710.

Hi everyone im reviving this thread since more information has become available and i wish to investigate the topic at hand to the full.

I Have made some research and discovered that the m1710 came with the Intel Calistoga platform with the 945pm chipset, Atleast in 2006.

Based on (http://www.tomsguide.com/us/the-fastest-graphics-notebook-ever,review-697-2.html) (im not sure if i can link to other websites but if not then im sorry)

Are there other generations of that laptop available? With a different platform because the 945 never supported and never will support the core 2 extreme 800mhz fsb. Also the 945 has no support for 8gb ddr2-800 memory so someone is iether wrong or its just that the first generation of the m1710 were 945 (if there were any generations).

Thanks in advance

isnt there anyone that can answer me if the m1710 came with the santa rosa platform or with the montevina platform?

No Montevina - the M1710 takes 800 MHz bus or lower, not 1066.

So the cpu can run at 800FSB yet the ram cant. the ram MEMORY CONTROLLER  will downclock the ram to 667 and the chipset is the intel 965.

Amd what if i overclock the cpu and make the memory controller run at 800 will the ram run at full speed? (Lest  pretend that i solved the heat problem)

is it technically possible?

No, it is not.  The system does not support 800 MHz at the memory bus, period.

Ok thanks you have been very helpfull, as far as conclusions go:

The DELL XPS M1710 Came on the Santa rosa platform and the intel PM945 Chipset at first generation and the 956PM At second generation with the support of the 800FSB  For the cpu and 667 for the memory.  The motherboard supports mxm-he Video card modules.  The maximum amount of ram in the system of the first generation is 4GB DDR2-667 At 2 modules and 8GB DDR2-667 at 2 Modules on the PM965 Chipset.

The PM945 XPS 1710 Has been the first generation of the m1710 PM965 Was the second generaion.

Am i correct?

I am Quoting "The M1710 never came with anything other than the 965 chipset" Witch says the opposite of your last post "ALL 1710s use the 945PM chipset", The M1710 is a santa rosa 945 chipset or a 965?

Wiki says that "Santa Rosa platform (2007)" ...  "Intel Mobile 965 Express series chipset". (Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Rosa_platform#Santa_Rosa_platform_.282007.29)

I am confused from that contradiction.

Please advise...

No, and I must correct a few things as well.

ALL 1710s use the 945PM chipset.

All are limited to 667 MHz bus CPUs (it's the later M1730 that had Santa Rosa support).  The 800 and 1066 CPUs are not supported at all.

The video card IS NOT MXM.  It is a proprietary Dell card/socket format.  ONLY M170/M1710 and clone Inspiron (9300/9400/E1705) systems use it.

The memory IS 667 MHz max - no DDR-2 800 support at all.

The 1730 came with the 965 and Santa Rosa support.  The M1710 did not - it is a socket M design.
