Hi atulp,

As you are telling that the keyboard is non-operational. Please connect an external USB keyboard and check if you are able to setup the windows 7 on the system.

Please let me know if this helps.

Hi atulp,

First I’d like to know in which screen of windows 7 installation the keyboard stops working.

If the keyboard is not working all the time then I would like you to check if the keyboard is working by going into the BIOS and are you able to use the keyboard in the BIOS by pressing the ‘+’ or ‘-’ signs on the keyboard.

Also, I would like you to run the hardware diagnostics on the computer by pressing the ‘Fn’ + power button on the computer.

If the above step is not working to initiate the hardware diagnostics then disconnect the battery and AC adapter from the computer and press and hold down the power button and connect the AC adapter without the battery to  initiate the hardware diagnostics.

Please let me know the results.

Hi Ravi,

My keyboard is dead when the laptop boots up and goes into the setup mode. When I hit Fn and Power keys and then get F2 and F12 keys, only once I was able to go to repair mode and got the following results:

At the end of the repair menu, here is what i got:

"Start up repair cannot repair automatically"

Problem Details are:

01-  6.1.760..16385

02 - 6.1.760..16385

03 - unknown

04 - 224

05- autofailover

06 - 1

07 - NoRoot cause

OS Version - 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.1

Locale ID: 1033

I have already disconnected the battery but have not tried the last option of connecting power with power button down... I will report back what that does...

Thanks

Atul

You could try disconnecting the keyboard from the mainboard incase it is a stuck key for example.

<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

Once that's done you can try a Dell wired USB keyboard by itself to see if you can proceed further.

Ravi,

I had the batter removed already. I then held the power button down and connected the AC adapter and the laptop still goes into setup mode with an un-operational keyboard.

Let me know if you have any other ideas...

Hi atulp,

We will have release the static power from the system and check for issue resolution. Please follow the steps mentioned below to release the static power from the computer.

  1. Disconnect the AC adapter from the system.
  2. Disconnect the Battery from the system.
  3. Press and hold down the power button for 30 seconds on the computer.
  4. Connect back the battery and the AC adapter to the system and check for issue resolution.

Please let me know if this helps.

First two steps are done.

Can you provide specifics on step 3 and 4? - Do I hold the power button for 30 secs, release and then connect battery and AC adapter or do both while holding power button down? As you know that would hard for one person to do as these are 3 tasks (esp connecting battery - you have to turn the laptop upside down and it takes much longer to connect).

Thanks

Hello Ravi,

After I did steps 1 thru 4, my laptop will not even boot. the "A" and down arrow green LED's in the upper left corner keep flashing. The computer will not turn on and will shut down after a minute or so. It is now dead!

Hi atulp,

If the Numeric lock is OFF, Caps Lock and Scroll Lock are flashing then its ‘Modem error’.

You will have to reseat the modem or remove the modem from the computer and check if the computer is turning on.

Please follow the steps mentioned below in the given link to reseat the modem.

I am not sure what the names of those LED's are but LED labeled 9 is on, LED labeled A and down arrow are flashing.

Can you verify if those are the LED's you name? Also I do not have a modem on this laptop at least that I know of.

Hi atulp,

If the Numeric lock (9) is ON, Caps Lock (A) and Scroll Lock (down arrow) are flashing then its ‘No SODIMMs are installed’ i.e. memory error.

I’d advise you to Interchange the memory or reseat the memory module(s) one at time in each slot and check for the issue.

Please let me know the results.

Hi Ravi,

I re-seated the memory and keyboard and tried everything you suggested to no avail. I can either go to "start windows" mode (with F12) but the keyboard will not accept any input from the keyboard for our password to start or go into "setup" mode (with F2).

When I start recovery, it says windows did not start normally and starts to repair - "Startup Repair" but it is not able to repairs (it fails) and then it dumps the same details as I listed on11/8 comments.

Any other ideas?

Hi atulp,

I’d advice that you perform manual operating system reinstallation on your system.

Please reply for any queries.
