D630 Modem driver

I have a D630 that I have reformatted and am installing the drivers.  The laptop has a phone jack next to the network jack on the back of the PC, but device manager does not show any entry for modems.

I looked at the packing list, and configuration info for the service tag on the Dell website, but neither shows a modem.

I downloaded the conexant driver, but when I try to load it, it advises no modem found.

Before we reformatted there was a modem.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Found my own answer... here it is for anyone with the same problem.

The issue was that I could not find any listing in device manager for a modem... and I also had a unknown PCI device in Device Manager that I could determine the nature of.

After reading a few postings, I decided to take a try at installing an audio driver... and found that you have to install the Audio driver first (then an audio component will show up in device manager)... once you do that, the "Found new hardware" wizard begins immediately - let it look for drivers automatically and it will install the modem... at that point a modem will show up in Device Manager.

The problem in getting here is that the system configuration sheet for your service tag on the Dell website, as well as your packing list... as well as Belarc Advisor (if you own a copy) will not find either device until the drivers are in place.  With the D630 I have, I had two choices for audio drivers, I tried the Sigmatel first just as a guess, because the other choice seemed more specialized.  Once I did that the autoinstall of the modem began as described above.

These were the last two drivers that I needed to install.  The rest were installed per outlined in the instructions for the D630.  To find this go to the main Drivers and Downloads Page at http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/downloads/en/drivers_help?

and look for the FAQ titled: In what order should drivers be installed.

The hardest part of this was determining what devices where present.  Invoice, packing list, system config, were of minor help.  The best approach would be to go to device manager (BEFORE you reformat) and take screen shots of the details of the various drivers (assuming your system is running adequately to do this).   If someone knows of a better way... please post here, I would be very happy to hear about it.
