Dell 3520 Touchpad

What have I got to do to turn off this stupid touchpad?
Sometimes I just reboot and it’s off. Sometimes I can open the Dell touchpad
software, turn it on and save, then off and save, and it turns off. Sometimes
I  relocate the USB mouse device and it
turns off. Sometimes it’s off for half a day, then mysteriously turns on. Yes,
I have the “Turn off when USB device detected” box checked. HELP! I have an
Inspiron 3520 laptop running Win8. I HAVE downloaded and re-installed the Dell
Alps Drivers.

Hi Jimmyb1234,

Press < Fn >< F3 > to disable or enable the Touchpad. Please try this and check if you are able to successfully disable the Touchpad.

The Fn F3 does has never worked that I know of. It may have worked early on while the touchpad was turning off like it should, but now that I'm having problems it does not work. During the period I started having touchpad problems there were no softwares or updates added the best I can tell. I don't even allow Microsoft updates after having problems with a few of those.

Hi Jimmyb1234,

Please try to perform “System Restore” to an earlier date when the touchpad problem was not present. Click here to find steps on how to perform System Restore in Windows.

I've loaded several software packages since I started having this problem and doing a system restore is not something I really want to do if I can avoid it. However, I have some new information. I have been doing a "restart" and sometimes the problem would go away for while and sometimes not. It seems though that if I do a complete power down then a power up, the touchpad works as designed and will turn off. So I guess the question might be what is the difference between a power down and a restart? Also, not matter if the touchpad is working or not, the key does not work!

UPDATE! I left my laptop on overnight as I normally do and
when I woke up the touchpad was working and would not turn off again. I did a
power down and when I restarted it the touchpad still would not turn off.
Another power down and restart and the touchpad was turned off. It doesn’t make
sense. Is this possibly something to do with which driver is loading first? I’m
obviously not smart enough to figure this out!

Well, that was interesting. I must have had two drivers
loaded because after doing the device uninstall I still had working touchpad
software and a working touchpad, so I went into the software uninstall and
uninstalled it there also. After following all of your steps Now, no matter
what I’ve done so far the touchpad will NOT work. I’ve turned it on and off
with the touchpad software (with and without the USB mouse plugged in), rebooted
without the USB mouse plugged in, tried the key after rebooting
(with and without the USB mouse plugged in). Don’t get me wrong. A non-working
touchpad is MUCH better than one I can’t turn off. I now have a “Dell System
Detect” icon in the taskbar that I didn’t have before. Also, in the touchpad
software there is a checkbox for displaying an icon in the taskbar, which is
checked but no icon is there. I never had one before reinstalling the
drivers/software this time either. Is that a problem? Thanks for all your help
thus far.

Hi Jimmyb1234,

After uninstalling the touchpad drivers, Windows operating system will use the native touchpad drivers. Please refer this link for information about “Dell system Detect”: http://bit.ly/14J0osk

Hope this helps!

When I woke up this morning the touchpad was back on, and could not be turned off via software or the key. I powered down the laptop, then powered back up and the touchpad was off. As a writer I can't type with the touchpad on because my thumbs touch the touchpad while typing and mess things up. Is there a way to unwire the touchpad? There does not seem to be a software fix to this problem. From what I've read elsewhere on the internet this seems to be a real common problem and nowhere has anyone come up with a fix.

Hi Jimmyb1234,

Please follow the below mentioned steps and check:

  1. Type device manager in the Charms Search box in Desktop mode. Click the device manager result, and the Device Manager window will pop up.
  2. Expand Mice and other pointing devices.
  3. Right-click the touchpad's entry. In the menu that pops up, click Disable.
  4. Confirm your choice in the pop-up window.

Restart the computer and check the functionality of the touchpad.

This morning sometime between 5 and 6AM the touchpad turned back on. Once again nothing would turn it off other than a reboot. When I came here to send you an e-mail I saw I had received another from you. I followed your steps until it came to the disable part. When I right click on the touchpad under the “Open mice and other pointing devices” I have four options which are , , ,and . There was no option. The weird thing is right now I can not turn the touchpad “on” no matter what I try, but at some point tonight it will turn on and short of powering down nothing I do will turn it off. I’m trying to find out if something “scheduled” is happening around 5:00AM that is causing it to turn back on.

Hi Jimmyb1234,

Please see the image below:

Does this context menu appear when you right-click the touchpad in “Device Manager”. If possible in your reply please attach a similar image of the Device Manager from your computer.

The above picture is NOT what I see when following your instructions. I will attempt to show you what I see, but I think the difference is you are running windows 8 pro and I am running the standard windows 8 64 bit that came on my laptop. Well...I can't get the screen capture to post, but please believe me when I say my screen capture is EXACTLY like yours except there is no option. Once again this morning at 5:00AM the touchpad was off and would not come on no matter what I did, but at 8:30AM it was on and would not turn off no matter what I did. It took two reboots to get it off.

Hi Jimmyb1234,

Please check in the Windows Task Scheduler if any particular event is set to occur at 5.00 AM in the morning.

To launch Task Scheduler in Windows 8:

  1. Press and hold the Windows Key and then press “R” key on the keyboard to launch Run Dialog Box.
  2. Type “Taskschd.msc” and hit Enter.
  3. Thoroughly check the Windows that opens and see if there is any event scheduled to run at 5 AM.

Do reply with results.

I have gone thru everything I can see and there is not a single task that happens between 5 and 8 AM every morning. To make matters worse, today about 3:00 PM the touchpad turned on and it doesn’t matter what I do I cannot get it to turn off. I even went back and deleted everything you had me delete before and reinstalled it. I have rebooted at least a dozen times. As it is right now this laptop is useless to me as the primary use is for writing and I cannot write on this laptop without touching that dang touchpad. If I go into the Dell software and turn the sensitivities on the touchpad down to where touching it doesn’t affect typing my wireless mouse doesn’t work. I need to know if I remove the keypad and unplug or unwire the touchpad will the laptop reboot without having a hardware error? I need this touchpad not to work! Can you help me make that happen? Please let me know.
