Dell 7720 (17R) SSD and RAM upgrade
Hello everyone,
I recently bought a Dell 7720 (17R SE). I have researched many forums and cannot verify completely as my needs for some upgrades that I want to do.
I have a 1TB HDD 5400. I want to use it as the secondary and upgrade to a 128GB SSD primary. I don't have mSATA.(?)
I need some verfication from those who have done these upgrades ...

I know it's out of stock, but I'm using it for reference. This is the exact one that I want to use.

I'm not concerned as much with the RAM.
My main questions are involved with the SSD. I've been reading forms about BIOS settings, etc. but it has all been dealing with mSATA, etc.
That thread has a lot of good information, but I'm not sure exactly whether or not it applies to me because I just have the plain 1TB HDD.
Anyways, is it as simple as placing the drive in and installing Windows? Then chosing it to boot the SSD?
(The RAM link is just a helper for those who have been Googling making sure they locate the right RAM).
Thanks for everyones assistance.

Hi -ExCeL-,
Dell Inspiron 7720/17R (SE) supports a maximum of 8 GB memory. 4GB memory stick maximum on each slot. Dell Inspiron 17R (SE) has 2 SODIMM memory slots which support:
You can upgrade to SSD drive on your system but I would suggest you to upgrade to mSATA drive on your system to take an advantage of SSD technology which would be cheaper.

I have an mSATA SSD solution. Clean install of Windows 7 on SSD 64 GB, original 750 GB HDD formatted and used as data storage. No problems in install and booting. Maybe switching AHCI to IDE mode in BIOS, but not sure now, it's been few months since I did the reinstall.
I've got some instructions here, but as I remember it I didn't used them.
In order to re-install the Windows with an mSATA drive present in the system you will have to disable the Accelerate form iRST application.
• Launch Intel Rapid Storage Technology User Interface from system tray.
• Select “Accelerate” Tab, click “Disable acceleration”.
• Click “Reset to available” to reset volume.
• Restart the computer
• F2 – Go into bios
• Change sata mode from AHCI to Intel smart Response Technology
• Save and exit
• After system reboots, download and install the iRST application and Enable the acceleration.
Please let me know if this helps.
I think this solution works only if you have SSD installed and if you are using the Intel Rapid Storage whatever technology ;)
