Dell INSPIRON N4010 problems

Hello I had this laptop for 1 and half year, its a great laptop but issues are starting to appear. My first issue is when I'm using my laptop it randomly shuts off and sometimes when it shuts off it does not want to turn on. Another issue is when i charge the laptop it turns off also. Adding to that when my laptop has low battery and i charge it i also turns the laptop off, when the laptop if turn off completely when i charge it it turns on, that pretty weird.Another problem i got is every time turn on the laptop when windows boots up i get "The configuration for an element within the object is invalid in the boot configuration data store" and i used CCleaner to fix this issue but it cannot fix it. One last thing my LED light for power indication in the laptop does not turn on the HDD and Charging LED do work but that one dosn't work

Hi Anam1014,

Are you facing system overheating issues?

Do you get any error message when the system shut down?

You may run onboard diagnostic test on your computer to ensure the correct functionality of system hardware. For detailed steps on it, you may refer to link: http://dell.to/OUGnqT

In reference to battery charging issues, you may check the status of AC adapter and battery in system BIOS by following the steps below:

  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as you see the Dell logo, start tapping the ‘F2’ key on top of the keyboard.
  • If you wait too long and the Microsoft Windows appears, then continue to wait until you see the Windows desktop. Now shutdown your computer and try again.
  • After this a new window would appear. You can only use the arrow keys of the keyboard to navigate between the options as the mouse is not functional in this mode.
  • You may check under 'Main' tab if the AC adapter wattage gets detected.

Another step you may try is to check the status of LED on AC adapter and use a good known AC adapter to see if it makes any difference for battery charging issues.

Please share the findings.

Hi Anam1014,

Warranty policies depends on your region. If there are any open issues with computer, you might not be able to renew the warranty till issue is resolved. You may run diagnostic test on system hardware. You may also check the status of AC adapter in system BIOS.

If the test passes, you may uninstall and re-install the video drivers on your computer. To uninstall and re install the drivers:

  • Click on “Start” and right click on “Computer”.
  • Click on “Manage”.
  • Click on “Device Manager”.
  • Under “Display adapters”, you will find the video driver listed.
  • Right click on it and click on “uninstall”. (Check and make a note of the driver installed on your system and re-install the driver from the below steps accordingly).
  • Check the box to delete the software.
  • Restart your system and click on the link: http://dell.to/QjjZDA
  • Enter the Service Tag of your system and select the operating system.
  • You will find the video driver under “Video”.
  • Click on the video driver depending on the video card your system has. (Install the same video driver which you uninstalled from “Device Manager”.
  • Click on “Download File”.
  • Select “For Single File Download via Browser”.
  • Click on “Download Now”.
  • Save the driver on your desktop.
  • Once the driver is saved on desktop, right click on it and select “Run as administrator”.
  • Install the video driver by following the on screen instructions.
  • Check if the issue is resolved or not. If the issue still persists, update the system BIOS.

Note: Make sure the ac adapter is connected and the battery is charged 10% or above to update the BIOS. Also, disconnect all the external peripherals before updating the BIOS. All the programs should be closed and documents saved.

  • Click on the below link: http://dell.to/QjjZDA
  • Enter the Service Tag of your system and select the operating system.
  • Go to “BIOS” and click on the BIOS available.
  • Click on “Download File”.
  • Select “For Single File Download via Browser”.
  • Click on “Download Now”.
  • Save the BIOS on your desktop.
  • Once the BIOS is downloaded on the desktop, right click on it and select “Run as administrator”.
  • Follow the prompts on screen and restart your computer.

Please share the findings.

Hi i did what you said and my laptop hasn't turned off maybe its because it hasn't gotten hot, i now charge my laptop when it completely off and then use it when its full charge and I've got another i turn on my laptop i  get this {The configuration for an element within the object is invalid in the boot configuration data store} and also when it booting up to windows it takes a LONG time to boot up witch that's new. I check my C drive and i think every time it takes a long time to boot up it take 1 gb for no reason.

Hi Anam1014,

Please share the results of diagnostics.

Did you try the steps to disable and enable hibernation on computer? If yes, did you feel any difference after that?

Did you hear beep codes at Dell logo? If yes, you may check the table below for information on beep codes:

Beep Code Overview
Beeps Description Possible Cause
1 BIOS ROM checksum in progress or failure System board failure, covers BIOS corruption or ROM errors.
2 No Memory (RAM) detected Memory or Memory slot failure
3
  • chipset Error (North and South bridge error, DMA/IMR/Timer error)
  • Time-Of-Day Clock test failure
  • Gate A20 failure
  • Super I/O chip failure
  • Keyboard controller test failure
System board failure
4 Memory read / write failure Memory failure
5 Real Time Clock (RTC) power fail CMOS battery failure
6 Video BIOS test failure Video subsystem failure
7 CPU Cache test failure Processor failure
8 LCD LCD failure

If you get 5 beeps at Dell logo, CMOS battery needs replacement. If you are able to boot to Windows, you may restore your computer to default factory settings. Factory image restore will lead to data (pictures, documents, programs, music) loss. Please perform a data backup prior to this step. Please disconnect any external peripherals (printer, scanner or any USB device) as well. For more information on this, you may refer to link: http://dell.to/Wj1rZe

Please share the findings.

Hi Anam1014,

Recovery partition would not work if you have tried changing the partitions by adding, deleting, or resizing it. In reference to issues with sleep mode, it is the settings of the power plan. You may change the lid action to 'Sleep' (on battery and plugged in) from the 'Advanced Power Options'. For more information on that, you can refer to link: http://bit.ly/VOe9PY

Do reply in case you need any further assistance. I'll be glad to assist.

Hi vivekn4010,

Are you able to charge the battery (despite battery having red cross on it)?

Battery being a consumable product has a life of certain charge cycles. The performance of battery depletes as per usage. One step you may try is to check the battery health from control panel by following the steps below:

  • Click on Windows logo on desktop and type 'Power options' in search bar.
  • Click on Power Options.
  • Check for the 'Battery Health Meter' among the different options on the left side of window.
  • Check for battery health and check if the battery charging is disabled. Enable if disabled.

If the issue persists and battery charge is above 10%, you may update the system BIOS.

Note: Make sure the ac adapter is connected and the battery is charged 10% or above to update the BIOS. Also, disconnect all the external peripherals before updating the BIOS. All the programs should be closed and documents saved.

Link to download system BIOS: http://dell.to/WV4qYs

If the issue persists, you may consider replacing the battery.

Hope this helps. Please reply for further clarifications.

Hi Chinmay,

My name is Abhishek, I am using Dell Inspiron N4010 for nearly 4 years and i am a proud owner of it.

It was all working fine with windows 7 ultimate x64 edition till last month. But started overheating and becoming laagy all the time.

Although i was aware but I preferred to go through the forum which suggested me to do a BIOS update. I downloaded the latest update which is A13 as compared to my old A10 , I did the update and it started working a bit fine.

But still the overheating and lagging problems were there. So, i opened and cleaned up the Laptop, which really had a thick layer of dust. It cleaning is an annual workaround for my laptop but since i moved to a dusty area, i have cleaned this time in 4 months.

It worked good and was cooler and less noisy. I shut down the laptop and slept. On the very next day, i.e. yesterday, i started the laptop and logged onto email accounts and left for breakfast from my workstation for nearly 20-25 minutes. I came back and found my Laptop's LEDs are on but the screen is off i tried waking it up, but of no use. i was wondering that how it happened when i have altered the settings to prevent the system to go on any of the sleep, hibernate or shut-down process by itself. Left with no other option i tried to shut it down forcefully. But to my surprise the laptop completely refused to shutdown. i kept holding the button for more than two minutes but it did not turn itself off. So, i took the power cable off and took the battery out. The laptop was now finally off.

To turn it on again i plugged the battery first and then A.C. cable and it has no lights on it. Tried turn it on, nothing, No LED blink, no light at all. I was surprised what has happened. Then i opened the laptop to see if any visible damage or burns on board or something i can figure out. Nothing has happened like the same.

I tried contacting Dell CC, i have been transferred to different departments and been told different things, no technical help all. Someone disconnected the call after telling me that the warranty is expired so i have to wait for monday to get the department who support customers with warranty expired.

I need my laptop working in one day to work on some real important stuff and With no hope from dell I went on googling the problem. And has encountered various solutions ranging from replacing battery, RAMs, HDD, taking CMOS battery out, Flushing off the reserve charge by pressing power button for 30 seconds and the above suggestions too. I spent whole day in hope to get it resolved.

First i suspected the RAMs(My laptop has  1x1GB samsung DDR3 and 1x2GB Kingston DDR3 sticks) so i checked both of them with different combinations with the A and B slots, no luck.

Then i suspected the HDD, i took the HDD out and checked if i can boot to BIOS and remain there for a long time, say 5-10 minutes. again no luck.

Took DVD drive out, booted, nothing comes up.

I tried to boot with just RAM and display but again no luck.

I wonder why LEDs don't come up or blink.?

All i got so far is when i leave the laptop for an hour or so, i can start it for nearly mere 30-40 seconds which gives me enough time to go to BIOS settings but while i try to reset the time even, It shuts down itself and even after pressing power button many times or for a long time it doesn't turns on.

I am in a great need to fix it. I have been told by Dell CC that i can pay 18,000/- INR to get an engineer at my place to fix this problem if my laptop is out of warranty which is a way too unaffordable to me.

I would gladly seek your help.

Thanks in advance.

Waiting for a quick response.
