Dell Inspiron N5010 Hard Drive

Hello,

My laptop shows the following message when I turn it on-
Realtek PCIe FE Family controller Series v1.19(08/10/09)
PXE-EGI-Media test failure,check cable
PXE-MOF-Exiting PXE ROM

Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key.

I am using a Dell Inspiron N5010 with windows 7 OS.

My BIOS boot priority:
1st boot       Hard Drive (I changed it myself to be first)
2nd boot      cd/dvd/cd-rw drive
3rd boot        USB storage
4th boot        Diskette drive
5th boot        eSATA
6th boot        Network

I also noticed that when I entered the BIOS. Under the main tab it says "None" for "Fixed HDD"! I don't know much about computers but doesn't mean that the HDD is perhaps dead or disconnected?

How do you check to see if the cable loose?  Is it easy on this laptop?  Do I have to open up the laptop.  It looks like that there is no easy access to the HDD.  Bad design.  Very BAD DESIGN.

Please help. Thanks.

Bruce LCD,

Try running the full diagnostics and report back any error messages.

How to Run the Dell™ Diagnostics Utility

Is the computer under warranty?

Bruce LCD,

Yes, it looks like a procedure to replace the hard drive. I watched a technician do this on my system, my hard drive is in a similar place, and if you're careful, it really isn't hard to do. If you want to see, instructions are HERE.

Not sure if the warranty extension would cover installation or not. They may send a hard drive and have you install it.

Thank you PudgyOne.  I ran the test.  No hard drive detected. :(

It's very hard to get to the hard drive on this laptop and check the cables.  I don't think I can handle it.   Poor design.

The warranty has expired but Dell sells extension for about $200.

My daughter uses this computer.  A few days ago started with this problem.  The computer froze at the desk top background picture with no icon or anything.  I was able get it to work normal.  Then she was loading some photos from an email and suddenly the screen went black.  And new problem started.

Any suggestion? Thank you again.

Bruce LCD,

Wonder if it's not seated properly. You may want to be cautious and backup all the files and folders that you cannot afford to lose.

I would run the diagnostics to make sure.
