Dell Inspiron N5050 CD ROM Issue - Device boot fails
Hi,
My Dell Inspiron N5050 laptop fails while booting. After i enter my user credentials, it shows System crash notification and again tries to restart.
I ran diagnostics on BIOS and CD ROM test failed OP test with 2000-0147 48328 error code.
Two questions :
1 : Does this mean CD ROM has crashed and needs replacement ? Any workaround ?
2 : Can i disable CD ROM through BIOS until i buy a new one ?
3 : How can i set IRQ setting of CD ROM to null from BIOS , i do not see any such option.
Appreciate your assistance
Regards,
Jasveer

Hi Jasveer,
The 0147 is an optical drive self test failure error - see this link - http://dell.to/1IuETMX
At any point, are you able to boot into Windows? What is the OS installed on the system? Are you able to boot to safe mode? If you could boot to windows at any point, then you could disable the ODD from control panel -> device manager -> right click on the ODD and select disable.
If you are on Win7, turn on the system and after the Dell logo, immediately strike the f8 key and choose - disable automatic restart on system failure -> when it crashes with a bluescreen, this time, make a note of the bluescreen error code and message. It will help diagnose the exact issue on the system.
If you do not wish to use the ODD, then download the service manual - http://dell.to/1Uzd88M - and remove the ODD from the system.
If the system is under warranty, we can help setup a service call and replace the ODD.
If the system is not under warranty, we can help setup a paid service call. Contact us via Twitter - @dellcares
If you wish to order the parts yourself, then you could contact http://www.parts-people.com/ and order the parts through them.
Keep us updated.

Dear RIshi,
Thanks for your response. Mine is a Win 7 Home basic OS.
I could logon in Safe mode and did disable CD ROM ( RW GT60 N ) yesterday. I was still unable to boot and system kept crashing. As automatic restart on system crash was enabled so I could not take the information provided in system dump when system crashed. I used your provided instructions to disable automatic restart upon system crash.
Amazingly when I booted this time, system booted up correctly. I am attaching the last error logs SS of the system. Please have a look.
PS : My laptop is out of warranty now.

Hi Jasveer,
Thank you for the update.
We have not received any logs (or attachments). Please check the same.
As far as the issue is currently resolved, I suppose you could continue using the system until you decide to replace the ODD.
Let us know if you have any other questions.
