Dell N5110 Not detecting external Monitor HELP

Hi,

I am trying to figure out why my Dell N5110 Laptop will not detect my HD TV anymore. It start a couple of days ago, I was burning a movie and saving a video file at the same time. I tried to plug my HDMI cable into the port and nothing happened. Normally ever since I started using this laptop it would configure automatically so I would not have to switch anything in the external display. After it did not work this time I went into the external display settings in the control panel and tried to detect the TV and nothing happened.

I have tried:

Switching the two different ports on the TV and switched the TV to the respective HDMI port Screen

Switching HDMI cables

Updated all HD drivers with both of the two different versions on the Dell website (not at the same time)

Updated the BIOS

I am lost as to what to do next. It has worked ever since I got the HDMI cable about 8 months ago and now it wont work at all even with a different HDMI cable(I am note connecting to a projector I am connecting to a Sanyo flat screen TV)

Please HELP

Thank You

Hi Kewen300,

Please run the diagnostics to confirm the hardware functionality. Here are the steps:

  • Restart the system and immediately start tapping the 'F12' key to enter the 'Boot Menu'.
  • Use the 'Arrow' keys to scroll down and highlight the 'Diagnostics' option. Press the 'Enter' key.
  • The diagnostics will start. Please make a note of error code/message if it appears.

Also, please test with VGA connection, if not done already.

Please share the results.

Hi DELL-Saharsh K,

I have not tried the VGA connection because the two places where I got the buy my equipment were out. But to give you an update on the situation I ran the Diagnostics scan and everything passed with no error codes being thrown.

I will try to get the VGA cable ASAP.

Thank You

Hi Kewen300,

Thank you for sharing the information.

As the diagnostics have passed, I will recommend that you completely uninstall and reinstall the video drivers. Here are the steps:

  • Click on “Start” and right click on “Computer”.
  • Click on “Manage”.
  • Click on “Device Manager”.
  • Under “Display adapters”, you will find the video driver listed.
  • Right click on it and click on “uninstall”. (Check and make a note of the driver installed on your system and re-install the driver from the below steps accordingly).
  • Check the box to delete the software.
  • Restart your system and click on the link: http://dell.to/QjjZDA
  • Enter the Service Tag of your system and select the operating system.
  • You will find the video driver under “Video”.
  • Click on the video driver depending on the video card your system has. (Install the same video driver which you uninstalled from “Device Manager”.
  • Click on “Download File”.
  • Select “For Single File Download via Browser”.
  • Click on “Download Now”.
  • Save the driver on your desktop.
  • Once the driver is saved on desktop, right click on it and select “Run as administrator”.
  • Install the video driver by following the on screen instructions.
  • Check if the issue is resolved or not.

Please use the key combination of 'Windows Logo' key and 'P' key to toggle the display. Also, if possible test this system with another external display or your TV with another system or HDMI device.

Please share the findings.

Hi Kewen300,

Thank you for sharing the information.

Please let me know the results once you have done testing.

You may also want to reset the TV settings back to factory defaults. You may refer to the user manual of the TV.
Note: Any customization made to the TV settings by you will be lost in this process.

Do reply with the results.

Hi DELL-Saharsh K,

I just tried connecting to another TV with a different HDMI cable. My laptop still does not detect any signal coming from the TV to the computer through the HDMI cable. Any thoughts on why it would not detect? is this a common problem? I am going to best buy tomorrow to get a VGA HDMI converter cable. <- Is this the cable you wanted me to try?

Thank You

You can't convert VGA to HDMI with a cable - VGA is analog;  HDMI is digital -- you need a powered converter box.

The HDMI port on the notebook is an output only - you should be able to send video from the notebook to the TV, but you cannot send a signal from the TV to the notebook.
