Dell Studio 1535 Display Gone Dark

Laptop: Dell Studio 1535

OS: Windows 7

Problem: Laptop has been in use for 4 years. Last week the screen just went dark, but not completely dark. I can just barely see the application windows and my cursor movement. I can get the screen to display back to normal state if I do things such as close the laptop lid and reopen it or press CTRL+ALT DEL to go to task manager. This is only temporary though as the screen goes back to a dark state after about 5-10 seconds. Is this a back light failure or could it be just a loose cable?

Thanks,

Colin

Hi,

It seems to be a hardware issue, I would suggest you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue:

1. Please run LCD BIST test. Turn off computer > Press and hold “D” and turn on the computer. Solid colors will appear on the screen. In case, the screen is still dark follow the next step.
2. Please check the quality of the display with an external monitor.
3. If the video displayed on the external monitor is fine, LCD assembly needs replacement.

Please keep me posted with the result

Thanks & Regards

I tried running the test, but screen went dark.  Re-ran the test using external monitor and everything displays correctly.

I even opened up the monitor display bezel to confirm the wires were not loose. I put everything back together and surprisingly the display worked for a few hours, but then went back to going dark. So I guess your right it is a hardware issue (backlight or invertor?).

Hi, I had more or less the same problem with my screen - sometimes works fine, sometimes half or whole screen is deem. How did you manage to fix it? Replacing it? Regards
