Dell Vostro 1500 Boot Problem (no operating system)

Hi, I am repairing a Dell Vostro 1500 laptop for a client. The boot error message was "no operating system". After troubleshooting by removing the hard drive and testing in another laptop, I confirmed that the hard drive works, however, not in the Vostro. I tried everything to get the Vostro to recognize the hard drive (boot setup, etc). The Vostro also did not recognize the CD Rom even though the CD Rom drive and the hard drive shows up in the boot setup menu. I believe that there is something wrong with a hardware component that relates to the SATA components. Any ideas? Thanks, Walter

Solved: Great Help! I went into the F2 Setup area and disabled the network boot. It turned out that the Hard drive was also disable. There is still problem causing the system continuously reboot. I am sure I can handle this. Thanks,

The hard drive can appear to work in another system, but not allow a bootup if the boot sector carries the damage.  Run an extended hard drive diagnostic on the drive - F12 at powerup.

As for the CD/DVD drive, if it does not recognize any discs, it's likely faulty.  On a system of this age, a failed hard drive and a failed CD/DVD drive would be among the most common of possible failures - both drives have exceeded their expected lifespans, assuming they're original to the system.

Tried your suggestion. Still does not work. The actual Error message is Intel UNDI, PXE-2.1 (build 082) Copyright (C) 1997-2000 Intel Corpration For Realtek RTL8111B/8111C Gigabit Ethernet Controller v2.17 (080682) PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM Operating system not found.

Does the BIOS (F2 at powerup) see the hard drive at all?
