Dell XPS 13 - Power button does not work

 Hi

I got my new Dell XPS 13 Tuesday (Core i7, touch screen, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD). I  started using it wednesday afternoon - yesterday (Thursday) - I really used it - where I also updated with the latest BIOS version.

Later that day I turned the computer off - but now I cannot turn it on again. Nothing happens when I press the power button.

Approx an hour before that happened - I noticed two errors in the event viewer - unfortunately I cannot remember what the errors said - but something like: power at core 0 and core 2 (or was it 2 and 4) - contact the vendor for new firmware.

Anybody having experienced the same error?

Hi Jennifer

I have not made any hardware changes. I have updated the BIOS to the latest version (30. March) – and also the Touchpad firmware (20 March).

About software changes. I wanted to make a clean install - so I installed Windows 8 Pro N - however now I could not install Intel7265 WiDi Utility (it kept claiming that my system was not supported [The laptop has Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7265 WiFi]) – and even though I had installed the Realtek audio driver – the sound did not work.

At this point I capitulated – and took the factory backup discs I had made – and restored the system back to the original state. Now the sound worked again. I when resized the main drive (C) leaving about 25 GB of unallocated space. After this I had restarted the system without problems several times. But after having the laptop to shut down and when pressing the power on button – it was dead.

To be sure – I charged it for 8 hours yesterday – and when tried turning it on again (with and without the charger plugged in) – it is still completely dead. The leads shows that the battery is fully charged.

I’m also quite concerned about the previously mentioned error in the error log.

Hi ,

Good day !Thank you for your reply .

I would request you to confirm if the recovery disks were made before the clean installation stage with the factory default settings because if the recovery disks were made after that then file would be corrupt.

Also I would request you to confirm these details ,

*)If there are any beep codes and if you are able to see the dell logo on start up then you can initiate the diagnostics by pressing the F12 key just after restarting the system ,diagnostics will perform a through check on systems hardware and accordingly will come up with an error code followed by an error message.

*)If you are unable to get to the Dell logo then confirm the status of the power button ,also provide the service tag of the system via private message so that I can look into the details of the system .

Awaiting your reply  .

Kindest Regards,

Hello Jennifer, I had the same issue today, I was downloading BIOS update for my INSPIRON N5040 laptop from Dell website.  My laptop is dead. Do we sue Dell website for killing  my computer or should we just make it very public?

Good day !

Welcome to the Community.  I am sorry to read that you are having this type a problem after downloading BIOS update. It could be  possible that the BIOS update was interrupted or sys crashed  while doing so .

Now to fix this issue I would request your assistance by confirming these troubleshooting steps,

*)When you try to power on the system do you see any indicator lights or hear any beeps emitting from the system.

*)Do you face the same issue with charger and battery ,do you hear the system fan spinning.

Awaiting a reply from you .

Have a great day ahead!

Kindest Regards,
