Dell XPS L501X speaker not working
Hi all,
I have just bought a dell XPS L501x, and all was fine until a few hours into use, where the left and right speakers stopped working and the sound now comes from the subwoofer only. I have had a look at this problem and have not been able to figure out what is wrong.
The left and right volume sliders both affect the subwoofer whilst any other sliders do nothing(except master volume), and the speaker setup is in stereo as default, though i have tried putting it into 5.1 to see if this helps get the speakers to work, but it had no effect. I have also tried rebooting, and resetting the audio to default settings, none of which had any effect on the speakers. I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem or could suggest ways to fix it.
Info:
Windows 7 64 bit
Dell XPS L501x
the speakers are, from what I can gather, in a 2.1 setup.
Thanks, Lam

Lam, if the Realtek audio driver is not installed, then install it.
f it is currently installed then uninstall it (go to Start>Control Panel>Uninstall a program) and download a fresh copy and install it. You can tell if it is installed if you see the word "Realtek" in the Sound properties, similar to this:
While you are in the properties you can right click on "Speakers" and then select "Configure" to make sure the configuration is correct.

Hi Jim,
Thank you for your quick reply. I am very happy that our forum has members like you.
I have Dell Audio by Realtek which is included in Dell factory settings Windows image. Software settings seem to be ok as I just restored the OS. I really hope that it is just a loose connection or something, not the problem with the mainboard or chipset etc. I googled around and it seems that I am not the only one getting this problem.
Anyone can point me out which hardware part I can open and fix this problem please.

Thanks for the good word.
If I understand you correctly, you have already performed a Factory Image Resore and returned the laptop to its original factory configuration. If that is correct and yet you still have the problem then it is definitely a hardware problem. If you are still in the 21 day return period you have the option of either returning it for a refund/exchange or letting Dell fix it.
You will void the warranty if you replace any parts, but it will not void the warranty for you to open up the laptop and check for a loose connection. You might want to check that the speaker cable is seated okay. You can get the Service Manual here, but just getting to the speakers would mean disassembling almost the entire laptop.
