Dell XPS M1330 Recurrent USB Problem
I have had this problem since I bought the laptop and each time I reported it to Dell, they replaced my motherboard but the problem still exists!!
There is a problem with my USBs. They are fine for a few weeks after I reinstall Windows but after a while they decide to not recognise anything that is plugged in to them. ie. printers, hard drives, even the webcam and fingerprint reader which are internally connected. The only way I can solve this is to go into Device Manager and reinstall all the drivers for all the USBs, something which I find really frustrating!
This is somewhat of a pain and I have found Dell to be of no use whatsoever. They say that this is solved with a new motherboard and I have had four new motherboards and still the problem exists.
I have a feeling the problem may lie with the motherboard itself being faulty but Dell wont accept this for obvious reasons. Does anyone have any ideas for why this is happening and maybe a possible solution?
Many thanks in advance!

wuw. thats tricky! do they really replace the board. if that's the case then the USB ports are attached on the board. as a step to solve the problem. try to use the same devices on another computer i seem to think that one of your devices are causing the problem if you have changed the board several times. please issue that its the same OS

Well I have changed the os to windows7 but that hasn't worked. I have tried different hardware and they all get the same results. And I use the same hardware on my partners laptop and that hasn't had any problems like this.

there are times when the solution is expensive but for such tricky issues i guess you should try any other model. preferably an upgrade dell model. since the laptop is still on warranty i hope dell may accept to change that at a minimum extra cost.

I have the same issue with my XPS M1330 on and off for years now. I've reinstalled OS multiple times and tried just about every OS out there and it's to no avail. I hope someone from Dell comments on this so we can find out what's wrong.

Yes, same problem here. My USB 2.0 devices wont work but other USB 1.1 devices (e.g. keyboard, mouse) are OK. The only two fixes are uninstall the Enhanced USB2 from device manager (it will automatically reinstall) or power down, take battery out for at least 1 minute.
I have had my hard drive and motherboard replaced (for other reasons), reinstalled vista updated the chipset and BIOs and the issue continued. I understand others have installed Windows 7 and the issue continued.
I believe the problem is the XPS is not providing enough power to the ports for them to enumerate USB 2.0 on plugging in the device. The devices seem fine once they have started working, although the problem may reoccur on restart/wake.
The problem can be largely prevented by connecting USB devices to a powered hub. But this is really not a portable/acceptable option.
I have noticed the problem is less likely to occur with the laptop plugged into the mains, and with the screen brightness turned right down and devices are plugged in one at a time (the less the better). So you could try doing this when first plugging in the device but it is hit and miss.
I don't believe there is, or will ever be a solution for this.
BTW the other fault in the XPS 1330 appears to be the power cable being too close to the VGA cable. When running high demand gaming graphics I get interference lines accross the screen, so use HDMI cable instead. Low demand such a Office, Powerpoint, video and basic games are OK though.
