Dell system restore does not work
I have a Dell Latitude E5500 with XP Pro on it. It has been acting very strange with files that I move. They get corrupted and I cannot delete them with out using special software. I thought maybe I installed something that might be causing it, so I wanted to do a complete restore to the condition when I purchased the laptop.
When I press Ctrl/F11, the system restore option does not display. Is this a Dell recovery option, or a Symantec recovery option? I changed the anti-virus software from Symantec to Trend. Can that be the problem? If so, can I reinstall Norton and get the option back? Thanks..

Thanks for the information. I found an external backup I made just after buying and updating the E5500 and recovered from it. All is well. Thanks again.

Did the system come from the factory with XP, or was it installed afterward?

Yes, it came directly from Dell. I have partition magic and it shows the partition there. This PC has been problematic from the start though. I get files that I cannot delete, especially if I move the file, instead of copying it.

Since your system uses Windows 7, you need to start a New Post.. Instructions on how to restore a Dell that shipped with Windows 7 are totally different from those that shipped with Windows XP. Installing an operating system from CD (XP) or DVD (Vista & Windows 7), destroys access to the restore partition with Ctrl-F11 (XP systems) or F8 (Vista & Windows 7). As long as the recovery partition is intact, both types can be restored to their as-shipped condition.

Hi there i am facing a same problem as u r . i have dell inspiron n5010 and by mistake i formate the machine with 32 bit windows 7
actually the factory default machine is come along 64 bitt windows 7
now i have recovery partition in HDD but i cant able to access the recovery and even though i did't make any recovery dvd or cds
so is there any chance to recover my machine as it factory default condition
i try to hit ctrl + F11 did't work so help me plz i m waiting any one plz

I don't like to cut a thread, but since heart1lover's post relates to another operating system, I feel doing so is the best way to respond to your post. You said that your E5500 Latitude came with XP installed. I can't remember the exact release date of the E5500, so I should ask if the system was ordered with an XP downgrade after Vista was released. If so, can you tell us if the Recovery Partition is actually a Vista image? The easiest way to determine this would be to look at the folders on the Recovery partition. If it is a Vista image, then there will be a Dell\Image folder on the Recovery Partition with a factory.wim file.
If your system has an XP recovery partition, it should display a blue bar across the top of the screen with www.dell.com on it at startup. If that blue bar does not appear, and you have an XP recovery partition there is a way to restore access to the partition and re-enable the Ctrl-F11 function.
Please advise so that we can give you additional instructions on the best way to restore your system to its as-shipped condition.
