Disable Discrete Graphics from BIOS
Hello,
I have a Dell Vostro 3450 with hybrid graphics and latest BIOS (A11). Switchable graphics is very painful for Linux and miserable on FreeBSD. Can Dell provides a BIOS upgrade with an option to disable discrete card ?
Disabling Intel Graphics may not be possible but isn't disabling discrete card possible?

I have a Dell Inspiron 14z and disabling the graphics card is not possible. Under Linux it gets powered up, but not used, so it just consumes power and heats up my laptop.
Please update the BIOS, so Linux users can enjoy Dell products.

Hi aatish9,
Dell Vostro 3450 is not designed to support Linux and unfortunately we don’t have BIOS option to disable the graphics card.
We do not support LINUX on this model. However since you have installed LINUX you can download the below mentioned drivers to see if it works.
Please find the link mentioned below to download LINUX divers for AMD video:
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/Pages/radeon_linux.aspx
To download the LINUX drivers for Intel graphics, find the link below:

Please revert for any further clarifications.
Thanks & Regards

It's not what is supported or not. It's the usablilty. What about legacy systems that don't support hybrid graphics?
As for the drivers you mentioned, it isn't needed. Open source drivers for AMD Video works much better than proprietary ones.
Business laptops aren't defined by just using Windows and play games while working. We have to work with different systems. And, Vostro series were supposed to be entry-level business series.
Allowing a BIOS switch isn't for supporting Linux, it's for adding features that make you better towards FOSS communities.
Even if you(Dell Inc.) cannot support Linux or BSD, you can atleast provide feasible environment for these operating systems to work.
And, why was Dell Vostro 3450 certified by Ubuntu if Dell didn't do any effort to make it certified?
Regards,
Aatish
(Running FreeBSD on Dell Vostro 3450 with a glass on top of it. My Vostro now works like hybrid machine. It boils water without any fire.)

Hi aatish9,
Normally Dell Vostro 3450 that are shipped with Windows 7, does have an option in AMD catalyst center to disable the video card (Discreet or integrated) However, we do not have an option on BIOS to disable the video card.
Please check if there is an option to disable the graphics card on LINUX, if that does not work, I am afraid we do not have any other options to disable the video card.
Ubuntu is aware of this particular issue with systems using switchable graphics and users are waiting for a fix.
Thanks & Regards

There is an option and it works for Linux. I can disable the dedicated graphics card under Linux. The reason I asked for BIOS level switching is because some other operating systems like FreeBSD cannot switch graphics cards on their own.

Hi AATISH9,
I am glad to know that Linux does have an option to disable the graphics card. Unfortunately we do not have any options to disable graphics card on BIOS.
Thanks & Regards

BUMP:
Is Dell working on a solution or what?
We do not want to open the machine and take the discrete GPU out from the mainboard by hand, so please do something about it.
