I have a D300XT that does the same thing...

Here's how I fixed it, hopefully this will work for you too:

I traced the problem to the "Adobe Gamma Loader" tool, which automatically loads when you login.  Simply remove the shortcut to this tool from your Start Menu-->Startup folder and the problem should go away.

Here's a little more background info on this problem and some other tidbits:

Adobe Gamma Loader is a configuration/calibration utility for tweaking how colors are displayed on your screen, and it's installed with Adobe Photoshop. It's also included with a few other Adobe software packages, but my experience has been that unless I have a specific need for its display-tweaking capabilities, I do not have to load this utility when I login, or ever really.

Here's a temporary fix that worked for me for many months before I realized what was causing my screen to dim to a dark-green tint...  Press Fn-F8 (or whatever key-combo toggles between built-in LCD and external VGA port). You may need to press it more than once to cycle back to build-in LCD. For some reason the hard-reset of the display that this keypress causes will unload Adobe Gamma Loader so that it is no longer affecting the colors on your display. In fact, for many months, it was a standard login keypress, which I attributed to my notebook's many war scars, including small stress-cracks developing over the hinges on the back of the LCD panel. But I've had a broken lid-latch for 2 or 3 years, and only recently learned how to get it to completely close by squeezing the hinges.
