Drop down menus disappearing?? Please help

I installed the sims 2 game and for those that are familiar... when I click on an object the action menu appears momentarily then disappears before I have a chance to click any of the options.

This also happens in other drop down menus whilst browing the internet etc. It's only started happening recently.

I have tried disabaling the touchpad and using a usb mouse but the problem still persists. Rebooting does not work, nor uninstalling and reinstalling the game.

Please help me I'm at my wits end!!

have a dell laptop with windows XP.  I have the same problem with the menu disappearing before you can select an action. I have tried a billion various solutions (including installing new drivers, uninstalling drivers, BIOS updates, re-installs of the game, system recoveries, testing and scans of every sort, uninstalling virus protection software, and on and on) and spent hours searching for an answer. EA support was a joke!!! My husband is a software developer and tried to figure it out too, but couldn't. I have finally been able to resolve it for my computer after reading a random thread on phantom keystrokes. It seems there are phantom keystrokes.

Here it is:

A key becomes out of sync  - I believe  - and can often be corrected by hitting it quickly 3 or 4 times. The potential keys are CTRL, ALT, Shift, or Num Lock.

I've had the problem randomly go away and come back and have been unable to directly relate this to anything until tonite. so try that. You'll know right away if it worked or not when you start the game, If it goes directly from the EA green circle to loading the game and skips the middle character action scenes, you still are getting phantom keystrokes. (Also when you load a neighborhood, if it  goes directly to the selectable houses and skips scanning over the neighborhood).   Good luck. I know how crazy that can drive you!!
