E7450 streaming video issues
Hello,
We have a few users that are having issues with streaming video running choppy from Youtube, Facebook, Hulu, etc. The choppiness is exacerbated when the user moves the mouse or window around. This is on E7440 and E7450 laptops with i7-4600U and i7-5600U processors respectively. The issue seems worst when the laptops are connected to a monitor through an E-Port dock.
Troubleshooting
- Tried streaming video in Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome-- poor performance in all browsers.
- Checked network speed-- 250mbit down, 250mbit up.
- Tried streaming video on my Macbook Pro-- good performance in all browsers.
- Updated drivers to latest using Dell Command Update.
- Used Dell Command Power Manager to set power settings to high performance.
- Reset BIOS to defaults, reimaged laptop and tried the steps above again.
Any help in resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated as it is very frustrating for our users.
Thank you,
Nathan

Nathan,
I am sorry to read that your users are having the problem. Do you have any information on how long the problems have been occurring? Is this something that has been going on for a while or just recently started? Do these systems have similar builds, are the operating systems and software load the same between them? I understand that the systems have been reimaged, have they been tested with just a limited software load to see if that makes a difference?
If the problems only occur when using external monitors what resolutions are the external displays using? Is the problem noticeable when the systems aren't docked?
The E7440 only has integrated Intel HD graphics while the E7450 can ship with discreet video with the Nvidia 840m graphics. Is there any difference in performance between your 7440 and 7450s that you can tell?
The systems should have more than enough power for standard video streaming, I would look at the software running in the background and see if that could be causing a problem. If you have a clean reinstall and a very limited load of software has been reinstalled, it should increase performance. If most of the original software has been reinstalled on the systems, you can try msconfig and start with a limited lead-out and see if it makes a difference. The document may help if you aren't familiar with using msconfig.
One other thing to occurs to me to test is speed step. You will need to enter the BIOS and under the performance tab look for and disable speed step and save changes and see if that makes a difference.
If you continue to have problems please reply with the operating systems on the units, basic idea of software load. Please let me know if the problem started at a specific time or date or something that has always been noticed with the system and we can go from there.
