Fingerprint Reader Not Working - Studio 1537
My wife's Studio 1537 "AuthenTec Inc. AES2810" fingerprint reader has stopped working. The problem started when the system's Software Update offered an update (from 4.x to 5.x). At the end of the install I got an error message about a particular file was "not marked for install", error 2753. Found a solution online for this to type "regsvr32 vbscript.dll" at command line-after that the install worked. However, still got the message that the fingerprint reader was "not detected". I have uninstalled both the software and the driver about 10 times to no avail. Went back to the original 3.x software version from install disks provided when I bought the computer, then upgraded from there to the latest version (checking along the way, but no luck). I let windows find the driver from Windows Update, I've downloaded the driver from the manufacturer, etc. Deleted the device and let windows find it again...tried every version of the driver I could find. Nothing seems to connect the software with the hardware, yet device manager reports that the device is "working properly". Software insists it isn't connected.
This system came with Windows Vista and I upgraded about a year and a half ago to Windows 7 Ultimate. Been working fine ever since (until this upgrade episode).
Any thoughts?
Thanks.

Ravi, thanks for your help but the problem persisted after following your instructions. Nothing seemed to work. The solution, which I finally discovered through trial and error:
1. Remove all existing drivers and software for the fingerprint reader from the machine. Reboot, disabling the network adapter so Windows cannot find the driver.
2. Download and install the latest driver from the AuthenTec website (for my reader-AES2810 Common Driver - current build 9.0.9.1003):
support.authentec.com/.../Drivers.aspx
3. Reinstall the original software from the disc that came with the computer.
4. Let the system "software update" module offer additional updates until the current version (as of now 5.30.248a) is installed. Unfortunately, the Digitalpersona wewbsite apparently no longer supports this software. However it does come through the system software manager that came with my system once the original is installed.
5. Reboot the system.
Works like a charm now :) Hopefully with may help others with the same problem.

Hi kenp2002,
Dell Studio 1537 has not been tested on Windows 7 Operating system. I would suggest you to uninstall the ‘Fingerprint Reader’ from the device manager by following the steps below.
After the uninstall finishes restart the system. Then reinstall the Fingerprint Reader driver on the system. Please enter your service tag # on the link below, select the Windows Vista 32 bit and then download the Fingerprint Reader driver from Security section onto the system and install it in compatibility mode.
http://dell.to/ZaQuel
Download the R207052.exe from the link above, double click on the file, and extract it on the desktop in a folder. Look for setup file in the extracted folder. Right click ‘.exe’ file and click ‘Properties’. Click “install in compatibility mode’. Click on Application and select ‘Troubleshoot Compatibility’. Next, click on ‘Troubleshoot Program’. Click on Program worked in earlier versions of Windows. Click on ‘Windows Vista’. Click on ‘Start the Program’. Do not hit ‘Next’ until the installation completes. Once the installation completes, click on ‘Next’.
Please let me know if this helps.

Thanks for the info Ravi. I have completed all of the above steps and, unfortunately, I am having the same issue. I also deleted and reinstalled the digital persona software for the reader again. The original version that shipped with the computer had compatibility issues detected when I ran that...so I upgraded again, with no luck. The original boot strap disc does not allow installing in compatibility mode and the upgrade will not install without the earlier version. Digital persona doesn't seem to offer any support. Their website is all commercial applications and it seems they have abandoned the old software. Any other suggestions? Odd that it worked just fine for the last year and a half with Win7. Maybe I just got lucky and something became corrupted in the upgrade process??
