Firewire ExpressCard for Inspiron 1520
Howdy, from Southern Texas. I have an Inspiron 1520 Laptop that I'm wishing to use for audio/video purposes via a 'FireWire' (also known as Sony iLink) ExpressCard. The hardware I wish to use is of the PreSonus line (FireBox, FirePod, etc.), which requires 6-Pin 1394 ports. The PreSonus website has a forum which suggests that an ExpressCard compatible with their hardware should have a Texas Instruments (TI) chipset and that a FireWire/USB combo-card or FireWire 800 port are not recommended.
My questions include the following:
1.) Does my Inspiron 1520s 54mm L-Shaped card slot provide power for 34/54mm ExpressCards?
2.) If power is not provided by the card slot, how do I power the ExpressCard?
3.) Which is the best ExpressCard that matches above specifications and where can I purchase it online or through retail?
Thank you for your time and patience in reading my posting. I'm hoping for an expedient response that equals Wonkas 'Golden Ticket'.

1. No.
2. If the device you connect doesn't have a power supply itself, purchase a firewire hub that is powered.
3. You'll have to look through one of the online vendors to find a card that uses the required chipset. Contact the maker of the equipment you want to connect for their recommendation.

ejn63,
I don't know as much as you do about these hardware issues so I wonder if you could clarify your answers to questions 2 & 3? Do you mean that the 3.3 volts supplied by the Express Card slot is insufficient to power the type of firewire adapter card that MarshallRGV needs?. For example we know that a Soundblaster X-Fi audio card that goes into the Express slot will work -- doesn't it draw its power from the slot? Or maybe I don't understand the question.
MarshallRGV, as I said I don't know a lot about this, but I can confirm that when firewire has been discussed in the past on this board, it is aways a TI chipset that worked according to the posters. However those discussions were mostly pre-Express Card. I don't remember seeing a recommendation of a specific Express card model.

I am looking to buy the same setup for my inspiron 1520. Did you have any luck finding an appropriate firewire card? If so how are you liking the Presonus setup?
