Firewire issue affecting all the Dell Core Duo notebooks
I can't tell you the frustration I have had with the firewire port on my Inspiron 1520. I'm a professional musican and record using the firewire port. I thought I was going crazy until I caught this thread on the internet. Dell obviously knows there's a problem but refuses to do anything about it. I can't tell you how fed up I am with Dell, spending my day trying to figure out and troubleshoot the multitude of problems I have with this laptop instead of recording music. This is the thread:

If anyone knows a work around I'd really appreciate some help. I know I will get none from Dell.

Hi Dave!! Now I really don´t have any specific description of your problem.
I purchased the new studio 1747 with the i7-qm720 processor - and one reason that i got this one was the firewire port - i should use it with a TC Electronic Konnekt 48 firewire audio interface. It won´t work for more than few seconds after plug-in, and the connection is very unstable. I´m sure there is a kind og conflict - but the Bios is locked by Dell, so its not possible to make any changes that way... Yesterday I bought a Firewire Express Card for the express slot... Its a DEZEN with a texas Instruments based chipset on board... It works just fine and the cost is about 22$ max!! I´m still looking for a solution with the firewire port original placed on the laptop - but until now I think that I tried everything???
Hope for help!!

Hi Peter-
Thanks so much for the reply. I was under the impression that not even putting in an express car would work because the ricoh drivers still take over and mess everything up. I know the Texas Instrument chip is the key. I'll give it a try Peter with my RME fireface 800. Cant thank you enough for the help. Thanks for nothing Dell.
Much appreciated,
Dave

Hi Dave!
Just found out that the card is manufactored by a danish company - and I dont think that its available in the US.. But you just have to find a express card with a ieee1394 TI based chip... it will work as well.. I´ll just look up for you - hold on!!

Continued!
Then don´t hesitate, but give a reply in here!
It would have been nice if Dell started to use a firewire Ieee1394 that would cover a wider user surface than the ones they use now!
Best regds

Hi Audio Freaks!
Now - this may sound like a statement, and it is supposed to be!
After quite a lot of surfing around the web, I will state that there is a major problem with Firewire audio Interfaces and Dell Laptops. Most of Dell Laptops uses IEEE1394 chips that can´t run with this very demanding data transfer that comes with a high-end firewire audio interface. Ther are several firewire chips on the market that runs smoothly - etc. TI (Texas Instruments). The solution is to use the Expresscard slot, and purchase a Firewire Expresscard. Price is in the low end (approx.20-30$) and if you purchase a TI based card, I can tell you that you will experince a really smooth connection.
I just got my Studio 1747 with the i7-qm720 processor / 4 GB 1333 DDR3 RAM / Radeon Graphic card w.1gb DDR3 Ram / etc etc.. This congiguration should be exceptional for a DAW laptop - but then the problem with the Firewire occured!! Previous to this laptop purchase - I couldn´t get the information i needed for stating if the Firewire chip inside the Dell product was a TI based or not!!! But now I´m using the DEZEN expresscard 34mm slot, even it has two firewire connections - and I have never been so satisfied with a Firewire Audio Connection - audio latency is down to 1,2 ms with 30 tracks audio recording... never seen it better!!!
PS! My audio Interface is the Danish High End Firewire Interface , TC electronics, Konnekt 48..16xinput and 24xoutput
Do you have any exxperince with DAW and Dell laptops, or just connecting external audio, video or other demanding equipment to your Dell Firewire port - the don´t
