I suggest you start by running a Diagnostics on your hard drive. Press the F12 key at the Dell Logo on startup, select Diagnostics and run an extended diagnostics on your hard drive. Post back with any error codes. If the diagnostics pass, then it could be an issue with windows vista. You can do a PC restore which will restore the computer back to factory settings. Note you will lose all data. Start with Step 3.
I have the same issue with a Dell XPS 501x with windows 7 I've had for just over a year. This morning I started it up and got the black screen boot/bcd message.
When I put in the windows 7 reinstallation DVD and turn it off then back on I get the same screen over and over.
When I turn off and on again and try hitting fn f12 when I see the dell logo it just freezes on the progress bar and dell logo.
What should I do? I need everything on the computer.
