Hi Gill x,

Please follow the below mentioned steps:

  1. Open Charms Search box in Desktop mode and click Control Panel, and then, under “Appearance and Personalization”, click “Adjust screen resolution”.
  2. Click the drop-down list next to “Multiple displays”, click “Extend these displays”, and then click “OK”.

Check if there is any display on the external TV.

Make sure the monitor you want to extend your desktop to is turned on and plugged into the HDMI port, you might also need to select the correct source labeled on your monitor's controls to ensure the monitor is using the correct video port.

Please post the results.

Hi Gill x,

Please press Windows key +

key, and try to extend the display on the external TV.

Or you may try key combination < Fn >+< F1 > to open the screen resolution panel to extend your desktop to an external monitor and also change the display settings.

Please post the results.

Hi Gill x,

As the issue is with the HDMI port, I would be glad to arrange a service on the computer. Please check warranty status by entering the service tag of the computer in this link: http://dell.to/13VPd97

Please private message me the service tag, registered owners name and address.

To private message me please click my user name and click Start conversation.

In case of expired warranty scenario, we would not be able to extend warranty entitled services.

If the warranty on the computer has expired, below link would help you in contacting expired warranty services (this is for US based customers): http://dell.to/VPYT4T

Awaiting your response!

I have an inspiron n5050 with windows 7 with expired warranty and me too is having issues with my hdmi port. It no longer works on my Sony and Vizio tv's but it works on my friends RCA tv. It was  for working for 1 year and now that my warranty has expired it no loner works. Why would it suddenly stop working on my tv's but work on a RCA tv? so that tells me that the hdmi port is sort of working. I too also did the instructions and it still wont work.

I'm honestly beyond frustrated one minute the HDMI cable is working perfectly fine on my Dell inspriron and then next thing I know its not working anymore. I've done countless attempts to fix the issue but nothing seems to work. WORST of all I called Dell to get them to tell me how I could trouble shoot and they tell me over the phone after 17 minutes of 'REGISTERING'  that they can't do anything because its out of warranty. I've already disclosed that information which they have transferred me to a non warranty department so not only was my time wasted. I still got no help at all and now I'm stuck with no solution. What a waste of money and a horrible company. Apple NEVER treats their customers like this!!! I would never ever give dell $1 due to the lack of customer service and trying to get you to spend more money to find out a solution to their products.

I have solved the HDMI problem on my Dell XPS laptop. They sent out an engineer who changed the motherboard but to no avail. He couldn't explain the cause of the problem. However I took a punt and ordered a mini display port to hdmi adaptor (as the laptop has a mini display port socket). Eureka! The TV was recognised once I restarted the computer.

On my TV, I have to select which cable port I'm using, before my computer knows that I want to use the HDMI.
