Help! I can't return XP to the original factory settings using Ctrl+F11 or through System Restore or using the original CD. Any ideas?

Problem:

I cannot return my Windows XP (running on a Dell 1210) to its original factory settings.

What I’ve tried:

Attempt #1: Using Ctrl+F11

I’ve tried using Ctrl+F11 and it doesn’t work (it just beeps).

Attempt #2: Restore using System Restore from the Start menu:

I get two errors:

Error #1 states:

Explorer.exe application error. The instruction at “0x781c6555” reference memory at “0x781c6555”. The required data was not placed into memory because of an I/O error status of 0xc000009c”

Error #2 states:

System restore Application error signature: event type: InPageError P1: c000009c P2: 00000003

The following files will be included in the error report:

C:\docume~1\admini~1.014\locals~1\temp\wer8c0e.dir00\rstrui.exe.mdmp

C:\docume~1\admini~1.014\locals~1\temp\wer8c0e.dir00\appcompat.txt

Attempt #3: Restore using the original system cd (hitting F12 from startup)

Setup loads files for about a few minute, then, after stalling a bit while loading mylex exr2000, 3000//ar160, 170, 352 raid controllers, I get an error that states:

file cercsr6.sys caused an unexpected error (32768) at line 3540 in d:\xpsp\base\boot\setup\setup.c.

ANY IDEAS??

If you have not done so, you should run an extended hard drive diagnostic (F12 at powerup).  Also check the CD for scratches or damage.  Clean the lens of the CD drive as well.

Further, since XP goes end of life in about 50 days (April 9, 2014), after which there will be no further security updates for it, it's time to move on and upgrade to a supported operating system.  As of 4/9, XP will essentially be useless on the Internet.

For more details on running the extended diagnostics see here:

http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/f12-preboot-diagnostics/

If they pass you need to manually install, the recovery partition is likely corrupt.

I advise upgrading to Windows 7 or 8.1 32 Bit as XP expires in less than 2 months and its expected that there will be a global attack on Windows XP when Microsoft drops support for it for more details see:

For details in clean installing Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 see my Windows Reinstallation Guide:
