Hi Simona,

I recommend you to remove the battery and disconnect the adapter, press and hold the power button for few seconds and release to drain the flea power. Now try to restart the computer and check if you get the same error message regarding adapter.

If the issue persists, check  the status of Adapter in bios by restarting the computer and tapping F2 on Dell logo and check for the adapter type.

Use a known good adapter, if Known good adapter works fine that means it should be an issue with the original adapter.

Also update BIOS from the below link:

http://dell.to/UDHwFk

  1. Click “Download File” and save the file on desktop.
  2. Ensure to connect the AC Adapter to the computer, run the BIOS file.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to update the BIOS.
  4. Restart the computer when prompted.

Let em know the status.

Awaiting your response!

Hi, thanks for your quick reply.

I have done the following:

check  the status of Adapter in bios by restarting the computer and tapping F2 on Dell logo and check for the adapter type:         A01 -- I dont know what that means?

I have also updated BIOS as you recommended.

I dont have any known good adapter so I cannot check this?

But it's still doing it - "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a dell 90W AC adaptor or higher for best system operations. "

Any other ideas?

Simona

Try another Dell adapter - if that doesn't solve the problem, your system needs an internal repair (power jack or mainboard).

This advice seems pretty complete and hits on all the suggestions I've read in other threads.  This seems like everyone's canned resonse.. "update the bios" .. well news flash; when the charger doesn't recognize.. I get No A/C adapter when checking bios w/ F2.. but the computer runs on it when I pull the battery.  When this happens, you can't update the bios.. try to run bios update w/ battery pulled.. you need a battery w/ at least 10%; try to run it w/ battery in [its sitting at 76% charge left], it says can't update w/ no a/c adapter [but its plugged in both ways].  To me, this can only be one of two things.  DC jack has gone bad.. and they are replaceable OR system board's charging circuit is bad.. since the notebook is old and out of warranty, I hope its the first.

Frustrated,

Rob
