Help - LAN Microsoft TV/Video ... what is this?

I hooked up my sony dv camcorder through firewire on my 5100.  Now I noticed  in the network connections, (winxp home) i have 4 connections instead of three:

1394 Connection - always been there

wireless - dell 1300 truemobile

LAN- Broadcom wired ethernet

Local Area Network - Microsoft Tv/ Video ---- this was never there before... what is it?  It uses tcp/ip and even assigns itself an ip adress!  Can someone shed some light on this issue?

Thanks in advance,

Dave2Lk,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Adding a USB Camera to Windows XP Creates Local Area Connection 2
This article was previously published under Q303302
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;303302&Product=winxp

SYMPTOMS
After you add an universal serial bus (USB) camera to a Windows XP-based computer, a Local Area Connection 2 icon may be created in the View Network Connections sections in My Network Places. The information that is displayed below this icon describes the connection as:
Microsoft TV/Video Connection

RESOLUTION
To work around this behavior, restart the computer.
After you restart your computer, the icon for the Local Area Connection 2 is not displayed.

STATUS
This behavior is by design.

Additional Note: This problem seems to be associated with adding either USB or IEEE devices to a system.
Do as Microsoft recommends and reboot the system. If that does not work try removing the adapter from My Network Places, and reboot the system. The additional adapter does not affect the system performance in any way, it is simply a visual cosmetic problem that the adapter remains in My Network Places. Once you disconnect the USB or IEEE device that was added to the system, the additional adapter should disappear.

Hi

This happened to me when I installed Dazzle DVC80 in my dell system. But the worst thing is my internet connection stopped working. I tried this in my other 3 system, every single time it messes up the internet connection. I have a cable modem awith Linksys router and WiFi connections.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Vsundar,

The only alternative I could think of is to create a seperate hardware profile.
That way you could have a hardware profile with the 1394 3rd party device disabled, and your internet connection working.
The other hardware profile would have your 1394 3rd party device enabled, and the internet connection not working. When you want to use your 1394 or Internet Connection, you would simply
need to reboot and choose the appropriate hardware profile.

I have experienced the same problem with a recent Intel P4 motherboard with built-in IEEE 1394 Firewire. Plug in a Video source, it builds the Microsoft TV/Video LAN and Internet connectivity goes away. From a command window I can ping out on the Internet if I ping an IP address, but not if I ping a URL. Browsers and mail clients stop working.

An Adaptec tech told me it is a problem with XP's implementation of Firewire.

But exactly what is it that stops the Internet connectivity?

Jay,

That is a good question.
From everything I have found it definately points to a problem with XP.
Unfortunately I could not find anything on Microsofts web page or otherwise, that described what is causing the problem within XP.

Perhaps Dell could ask Microsoft?

I found that I can "fix" the problem by deleting C:\Windows\inf\ndisip.inf and C:\Windows\inf\ndisip.pnf. Then when I plug in a Firewire/1394 device XP Pro finds it and it works as a video input device, not loading the "Microsoft TV/Video" network. Then, I go to device manager and delete the yellow-questionmarked "Unknown Device" at "Other Devices". This "fix" has seemed to work so far, but like you I find no recognition at Microsoft.

MS should tell us what is going on and explain why I had to take the action I did.

A followup with some other solutions that worked for others:

Jay,

Thank you so much for that info.
I have seen this problem once before, but have not ever seen a solution.
It looks like it is a problem with the default Windows/INF files.
Unfortunately, there is no clear explanation on why the problem is happening.
I will pass this information on to my engineer contact at my next meeting.

Thank you. I think we are all waiting to hear from Microsoft.

What concerns me is that the fixes may be ignored by MS, and
a later version or patch applied for some other reason by MS
could put us back where we started.

An acknowledgement from MS that there is a problem would be
very reassuring.

Just in case another ME user happens this way: I also had a routine running-up whenever I dialed in to my ISP. It began to occur after I updated WMP to 9.0 and OE to 6.0. I can't say which of these MS programs contained the little bugger, however, I pulled up my network places dialog box and found the connection. I disabled the driver and the message from my NIS has not reported that there is a connection becoming established.
Anyhow, I don't believe this is an XP issue.
