Help required please C drive showing full ?
I have a dell inspiron laptop which when bought had been set up by Dell to have my hard drives divided into a C & D drive.
I have routed all my documents music etc to go to the D drive which has approx 100gb. My C drive has approx 59 gb . Now every few months or so I keep getting a message that my C drive is almost full (currently 1gb left).
Can anyone tell me what is being entered onto the C drive & where it is going and how i can delete this stuff which keeps filling it up?
A friend suggested that i should reload windows. Now I’m not a PC expert and whenever I have done things like that in the past major problems occur.
My laptop is running OK and has been for the last few years, so do not want it to go into meltdown!
I would appreciate any help on this matter or any guides that may help me.
Why do Dell split the drives like this?
Yours hopefully

Hi,
Welcome to the community,
By default all the applications and software are installed in C: / drive. Since the system drive has two partitions, you can try and free some space from C:/drive.
You have to go to add and remove program in control panel and remove software and application that is no longer used by you.
Alternatively you can try:
Start-> All Programs-> Accessories-> Run
And type appwiz.cpl, this will take you directly to add and remove window.
Another way to sort out the issue is to reinstall windows on the computer.
Before you format the computer you need to take care of certain things:
1. Back up all your data to external hard drive or flash drive.
2. You should have windows media cd and driver cd for the computer.
For Reinstalling windows on the system refer to the following link.

Dell never ships the computer with partitions on the hard drive. It might happen, in case the system has been purchased from retail store.
For further help please feel free to reply back.

Assuming you have Windows 7
> open Windows Explorer, right click C drive, choose properties then "disk cleanup" - see what can be deleted
> click the Windows "Start button", type "create restore point" (without quotation marks),press "Enter" - click "configure" and check how much space is occupied by "Restore points"
> uninstall programs you don't need anymore - click Windows "Start button" and type "uninstall a program" -press "Enter"
Download "spacesniffer" and run it (as administrator) - no installation required. It gives you a graphical representation of the contents of the hard drive. It might give you clues where you still have private files (you forgot to delete/move etc..) buried somewhere on the C drive.Don't delete files which are unknown to you !

From my experience: If you are a "normal" Windows user you should have at least 25GByte of free space. You might get 10GByte back by deleting restore points, programs and using "Disk cleanup" ,but there will be more than 15GByte of junk left - spacesniffer could help you with that.

There are a few things you can try. I will assume you are running Windows XP as you only have 100 GB hard drive. However you should tell us your Model and OS.
1. Extend C: and shrink D: assuming they are 2 partitions on the one physical harddisc. The best way to do this is with EaseUs Partition Manager. Refer to my wiki here for details.
2. Use CCleaner to clear up space, this will get rid of temporary Internet files, temporary files, files in the recycle bin etc. and hopefully free up a significant amount of space. Note if your C: drive is quite small, you will to do this quite often and should either do 1. or 3.
3. Reinstall the OS as your friend suggested, to do this follow my wiki A Clean Install of Windows which will guide you through every step. The OS performance usually deteriorates over time especially Windows XP. 7 and Vista less so.
