The two keyboards -  backlit or not - look identical.

The ST Microelectronics chip is the trusted platform module chip - it has nothing to do with the keyboard.

Review your invoice from Dell - if there's not a listing for the backlit keyboard, along with a $20-30 charge for it, you don't have one.

PS - I just discovered that once you have activated the backlight, it will sleep when not in use but as soon as you start typing, it will light up again.

I just got mine set up and had the same question.  I DID order it as an add on.  Let me see how to describe this as this is the first Dell I've owned, lol.  Press the FN key and then the key directly under the "Page Down."  It has an arrow pointing to the right on it and a tiny rectangle with a bunch of little dots on top of it.  I hope that does it for you.  I'm still sorting through things and it appears to turn off when not in use and all I had to do then was just re-press the FN key and the backlight came back on.

Did you order it with the backlit keyboard?  It's optional at extra cost - not standard.

I don't know.

But compared to regular keyboard, how does backlit keyboard look? Does it have edges around every key that is transparent plastic or something?

P.S. In Device Manager in "System Devices" i have "Unknown Device". In description i see this:

"ST Microelectronics on PCI bus"

Also, in "Control Panel" in "Devices and Printers" i have laptop icon named after my computer name and that has exclamation point.

What if backlit keyboard feature is just disabled?

Hello,

Please let me know if I can upgrade my normal keyboard to a backlight keyboard for my laptop? I have a Dell Latitude E6420 with a normal keyboard and I want to upgrade it to a backlit keyboard. It is possible this thing? Can I order the new keyboard?

Hi andreizah,

Latitude E6420 have an option of upgrading to backlit keyboard. Here is the part#:

CN5HF Keyboard US-English Backlit (part# may vary from region to region).

Hi,

If I will replace my keyboard with CN5HF, the lights will work directly just with a simple replace of keyboard?

Thanks

Hi andreizah,

Ideally, it should work. The settings for the illumination can be adjusted in Dell ControlPoint (DCP) applicationThis can be downloaded from our Support Site.
