How do I delete everything from my XPS M1710?
Well, not quite deete everything and I don't intend to do this myself.
I have had an XPS M1710 for a few years now and it works very well. My brother's had it for a while now and it seems to be a fair bit slower than it was and I need to use it for work now. Also when I first got it I didn't fully understand the set up processes etc. and I've ended up with things like 2 or 3 media players that all argue with each other etc.
I can use a computer well but don't have any knowledge of programming etc. I bought this particular lap top as it was a good tool for all the design work I was doing at the time. I wonder now though whether I can basically wipe all programmes from my computer except what's already installed when you recieve it, Microsoft Office 2007 that I installed and internet browsers (is that the right word? I mean keep Mozilla basically). Obviously I would save all my documents else where.
As I say, I wouldn't attempt this myself but wondered if it's possible and how much it would cost. I really just want to clear it out and get rid of all the rubbish that sits in the memory etc.
Thanks,
Joe

The best thing to do is a complete restore to factory settings . It will run like it did when you first got it.
Back up any data you need to keep on to a removable drive, USB thumb drive, etc.
For Windows xp, start computer, while dell logo is on screen, press and hold the Control & F11 keys, then follow on screen prompts.
For Windows Vista, startup computer, when dell logo is on screen, press F8, follow on screen prompts.
Afterward, you will need to reinstall your Office software.
Good luck.

Thanks for that, very helpful. It's on Vista, I forgot to mention that.
You say I'll need to reinstall my Office software but will I also have to reinstall the software (two cd's or so) that came with the computer when I got it? Can't remember what they contained but I know I had to install them. If so, I'll have to find them first.
I take it once I do this, if I've missed anything, it's lost forever?
Also, is this a simple enough task for an idiot to do as long as I follow the instructions on screen?
Thanks again,
Joe

Can't really say on the 2 Cd's cause I don't have a clue what they were, but I'd assume the answer is yes.
Make sure you backup any information you don't want to lose. Once you do this, anything you didn't back up is lost.
It is not a hard task to perform.
Good luck
