How do you know which models have a track stick?

I'm shopping for laptops right now and was considering an Inspiron. A track stick is an important feature to me. I could find no place on the Dell website or in the Dell catalog I received in the mail that tells which models have a track stick. I called the 800 number and they said they don't have a list either. He tried to figure it out for me by looking at pictures of the models, but I'm not comfortable that that's a reliable way to know. If anyone knows of definitive information on this, I'd appreciate a pointer. I'm beginning to lean towards an IBM because the trackstick/trackpoint is that important to me.

mels4cats,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Basically, you would look at the product views of the various systems.  If you see a blue dot in the center of the keyboard then the system has a track stick.  Such systems are:

  • Inspiron 600m
  • Inspiron 9100
  • Inspiron XPS

Bob,

I have a new 600m right in front of me with no track stick.  I have one that is 6 months old that has it.

I need to return my computer and go to IBM as your site provides mis-information and no one who answers the phone at your customer care has a clue what they are doing!  I didn't realize that Dell had gone so far down hill!

After 2 dozen phone calls and even more emails to customer service and technical support, the only answer I get is that "most users don't like the trackstick and it is prone to break, blah blah blah"  No one seems to have a clue as to when the 600m stopped shipping with the trackstick, if I can or can not modify the new one with parts, which models do have it, etc.

I finally got a care rep who claims he is shipping me a keyboard with a trackstick that I can replace myself on the laptop.  I find this somewhat hard to believe as the additional mouse buttons below the space bar will still not be there.

After a weekend looking at compusa, best buy, etc...It does seem that no other models have a trackstick anymore...at least not the smaller compact ones like a 600m.

I agree. I think it's ridiculous that the type of "pointing device" is not listed in words in the specs for each model. Expecting the customer to try to look at the pictures (some of which, by the way,
don't zoom in well enough to even see) and worse yet, for the technical support at Dell when you call to not even have a definitive answer (they just try to look at the pictures, too), is just pathetic. I think every other brand I've looked at so far lists this information in their specs for each model.
