No, the covers don't fit the older model. And stripping the paint from a new notebook is a bit like buying a new car in silver and deciding you want blue - you'd be better off buying a different model that's available in the color you want, rather than sacrificing your warranty by altering one in a color you don't like.
Me too. I bought a n7010 three months ago from the dell sight thinking it had switchable lids. Purchased a big plaid lid and to my dismay, no button. I hope some one will post a mod for using the switchable lids. I guess I'll try to will sell the lid on E-bay.
