The key is hard-coded on a chip on the mainboard - as long as you have a backup set of Dell recovery media, you'll never need the key to install Windows.
Good reason to create a backup set, of course. Are you aware of any way to detect the code so it can be recorded? Call me crazy but I prefer to have all keys & activation codes recorded for reference.
