Update: I ran the Dell diagnostics CD, and under MOUSE the only mouse I had was the "PS/2 connected" mouse, which was the glidepad when I ran the diagnostics. Why is the pointer stick not listed?
I connected the keyboard cable directly into the connector at the bottom of the keyboard. Did I miss a connector that has to attach under the pointer stick or something?
Make sure that the keyboard is fixed in properly into the connector. Also go to "Control Panel" and mouse properties and make sure that the pointing stick is not disabled.
In diagonistics, the pointing stick will not be lsited in the menu.
you will not find the pointing stick options in the hardware tab. rather you would find it in the device settings tab. if you cannot see the tab listed in the Mouse Properties window, then install the drivers from the support site. link below.

Strange. I did not see the device option tab in mouse properties so i reinstalled the Alps driver you provided the link too. I still do not have any options for the pointerstick and it does not work?
I wonder if the Dell 8600 cannot handle dual input (glidepad and pointerstick)? My original keyboard did not have a pointerstick, the one i am using now is a replacement, but i would like to use the stick since it is there.

Under control panel / mouse, I have the Alps properties, but there are only settings pertaining to the touchpad, nothing about the pointerstick
Under the Hardware tab, I only see "Alps Touch Pad" listed?? no pointerstick
