IDT Audio Line in/Mic issue

I have an issue with my Mic where the IDT studio will recognise that i have plugged a device into the mic jack but then it wont playback  the mic through my headphones and nothing says it exists.

i have a Dell Vostro 3500 and im running Windows 7 home premium 32 bit.

the Mic that i am using is a Andrea SG-100.

I don't think you can enable monitoring on your laptop model using 7. Please see the Laptop Audio Faq's article about Input Monitoring.

Sorry that I misunderstood. Are you recording into a recording program and then playing back the recording? What program are you using?

When you plug the mic into the jack and you see a popup box, do you indicate that you plugged in a microphone, not a line-in jack? Is microphone selected as the input source on the recording tab?

I indicate it as a Mic and not a line in, then try the playback through IDT Audio (which doesnt work)

I then look for the mic using other programs (Steam and windows but im pretty sure steam uses windown to find the mic) which only give me the option of my built in mic array and not the Mic in the jack.

The name of your recording program is Steam? I googled "Steam recording program" but only came up with a game named Steam. Try using Windows Sound Recorder.

Steam is a Cloud Network client based on the sale of games online for download, it relies heavily on the use of a Mic

the program is not in doubt as the mic cannot be selected by anything on my computer where it should be able to.

For chatting? Earlier you wrote that the mic will not Play back". What did you mean by that?

the mic cannot be selected by anything on my computer

Which programs on the computer are you referring to in that statement?

Does the computer have the original IDT driver that was factory installed?

By it will not playback i mean on the IDT driver program there is a playback option for testing the mic settings etc, that function does not work for my SG-100, no sound gets played back to me, where as it works fine for the built in mic array.

Well the programs i am refering to are: Windows (yes my OS doesnt even know the mic exists) Dragon naturally speaking and steam (these are the only programs i have tested it with)

Yes the origional IDT driver is installed.

Here are tips that have been posted by other forum members about enabling the external mic. I don't have one for your specific Vostro model.

"If you are trying to use an external microphone with an aplication make sure to right click on the soud icon in the system tray click recording devices then put microphone/line in as your default."

With Windows 7, I've figured out that you must have one of the two set as your default to make the Microphone work. When you go down to the little icon on the task bar at the bottom and you right click the sound icon , and go to Recording Devices, Do you see the option for the External Mic ? If so , i would suggest you put it as the default , and then try it with whichever software you are trying to use it with. Also , depending on the application that you are trying to use , it may not be set up properly to use the proper Microphone.

Posted by forum member Jakpro, to turn off internal mic in a 1520:

Go to sound in the control panel and select the properties button for the microphone and then look at the bottom and select disable the device.

Hi, Here's how I fixed my microphone after disabling it to record internet radio..
Go to the
Control Panel choose "Hardware and Sound" then "Manage audio devices" in the Sound tab, then the "Recording" tab.
RIGHT CLICK on the dialog box and select "Show disconnected devices" and/or "Show disabled devices"
Left click on Microphone array to select it and click "Properties"
To the right of Device Usage, click the arrow pointing down and select "use this device(enable)"
Then choose Apply and OK. You will now see in the Sound/ Recording tab that its working.
Problem solved, all because of the right click facility.
To put a shortcut on your desktop for muting the microphone later, do this..
Go back to Control Panel and right click on the speaker icon or the 'Sound' word. Choose "Create Shortcut".

To set external mic levels:

Go to Control Panel>Sound>Manage Audio Devices>Recording Tab, and select the mic as the default, then in "Properties" select Levels and raise the number to 100.

I have a problem that bothers me quite a lot. In the Control Panel Area "Audio" there is no more recording device (=microphone) showed since i deactivated it. I am now wondering wether I need to install a new driver for my external microphone or whatelse the problem might be. It seems that no mic is activated at all.Non of my external microphones gets displayed there / is working when I plug it in. I have a Inspirion 6400 and use Windows Vista. Thanks 4 help,

Thanks guys! But now I found out myself how to make the microphone appear again. I have to right-click in the space where it was displayed before and then press "activate" at the relevant mic shown.

"Go into the Control Panel Area "Audio" recording device. Right-click in the space where (the mic) was displayed before and then press "activate" at the relevant mic shown."

That's all I've got. Other than that you could try reinstalling the IDT driver.

Another good place to post is notebookforums.com.

I found the fix by combining a few of the ones above.

I went to control Panal > hardware and sound > manage audio devices > recording (tab) > right click in recording and select show disabled devices > click on the (now shown) external mic and click enable > set external mic as defult and bingo, the mic is now working.
