Did you install the Dell Notebook System Software as the first item after you installed XP? If not you will have errors when trying to install the audio driver. The order is this:
a. Dell System Software (on the 1545 downloads page expand the System Utilities category). Download, install and restart.
b. Intel Chipset driver (expand the Chipset category). Download, install and restart.
c. Install the drivers including the IDT audio driver. The current XP driver (IDT R264250) that Dell has on the downloads page is the wrong driver. I guess it was somehow incorrectly listed as being compatible with XP. Instead, install the IDT R215959. It is an older XP version for the 1545. (But to install an older version you should first delete from the hard drive the files of the current version if you already downloaded and unzipped it.)
I have the same issue. After installing xp, audio driver wasn't detected. Tried to download audio driver from dell driver but failed. Then found this forum, I got the right one. Thanks Jimco.
Kris, thanks for the feedback. Since I posted I have firmly concluded that the current XP driver (IDT R264250) that Dell has on the downloads page for the Inspiron 1545 is just the wrong driver. I guess it was somehow incorrectly listed as being compatible with XP.

HI i have installed in this order
1. Dell system utility (Dell_System-Software_A03_R214472)
2.chipset 1)R197840 intel 2)R210475 realteck
3.video (R203389 intel video)
4.network (R203386 marvell ethernet controller)(R205222 half mini card)
5.quickset (Dell_QuickSet_A00_R204480)
6 Audio (R264250 audio) failed (ITD 92HD71B )(ERROR:this is not correct audio driver for the system (xp)the installer will now exit )
i installed the one given by u . it is cool man

I have the same issue. After installing xp, audio driver wasn't detected. Tried to download audio driver from dell driver but failed. Then found this forum, I got the right one. Thanks Jimco.

Oh, thank you so much!!!
I reformatted and afterwards noticed I'd lost my disk..
Downloading everything from Dell worked great except for this audio!
You really were a lifesaver!!
