Inspiron 1440 Battery
I have an Inspiron 1440 laptop that I bought in 2007 and the original battery failed in January of this year, so I bought a battery from amazon.com that claimed to be new. It had the same model numbers on it so I installed it in January and it didn't hold a charge very long and in October I got an alert that said that the battery needed to be replaced. I ordered a new battery from Dell and replaced the bad one. However, this battery doesn't hold a charge for very long and when I charge it, it only takes about an hour to reach a full charge. I don't leave the adapter plugged in except when it's charging, so I was wondering if there is something else wrong with the laptop that needs fixed. This isn't my primary computer and I don't use it every day. Has anyone else had this problem and if so did you fix it?

Hi mickiec45,
I would suggest you to try flashing the BIOS on the system. Please enter your service tag # on the link below, select the operating system, and then download the BIOS from the BIOS section onto the system and install it.

Also, I would suggest you to run the test on Battery on the system.
1. Open the link http://dell.to/14YjKb2
2. Select ‘Battery Life’ under ‘Simple’ tab.
3. Click on ‘Run Diagnostics’ button.
4. Let me know if the results.

I ran the diagnostic test and everything passed. I flashed the bios and got an error message that the download failed, but I checked my system info and it shows the latest download, so I ran the test again and it passed again. I couldn't find the battery life information, but the information shows that it charges to 100%. I don't remember who long the laptop holds a fresh charge but it did drain the battery to 20% after I ran the diagnostic test. I ran the second test with the adapter plugged in.

Hi mickiec45,
We do not have any known issues with the system. Please let me know the BIOS version installed currently on the system by refering in the BIOS (F2 during startup). Also, please download the BIOS file using a different browser and try updating it on the system. Please reply us if you are facing any issue with BIOS update.
