Inspiron 15 USB Wake Problem

I am not able to wake up my new laptop from sleep via USB mouse or keyboard. I would like to be able to do that because I usually keep my laptop lid closed, so the power button is not immediately accessible. I've searched the forums here and found similar issues with other models, and at least with the Inspiron 17R the problem was recently resolved with a BIOS update. I had no issues when using the same USB mouse and keyboard on an old XPS 8000.

Now for the details:

  • Model: Inspiron 15 (3521)
  • BIOS: A06
    • USB Wake Support: Enabled
  • Operating System: Windows 8 Enterprise 64-bit
  • Keyboard: Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000
    • Software: Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center
  • Mouse: Logitech Performance Mouse MX
  • Software: Logitech SetPoint
If I go into Device Manager, and look at various devices, I see the following:
  • Human Interface Devices
    • HID-compliant consumer control device - no Power Management tab
    • HID-compliant device - no Power Management tab
    • Logitech HID-compliant Unifying device - no Power Management tab
    • Logitech Unifying USB receiver - no Power Management tab
    • Microsoft Hardware USB Keyboard - "Allow this device to wake the computer" grayed out
    • USB Input device - "Allow this device to wake the computer" grayed out
  • Keyboards
    • HID Keyboard Device - no Power Management tab
    • Microsoft USB Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 - no Power Management tab
  • Mice and other pointing devices
    • HID-compliant device - no Power Management tab
    • Logitech HID-compliant Unifying Mouse - no Power Management tab
  • Universal Serial Bus controllers
    • Generic USB Hub - "Allow this device to wake the computer" grayed out
    • USB Composite Device - no Power Management tab
    • USB Root Hub - "Allow this device to wake the computer" grayed out
    • USB Root Hub (xHCI) - "Allow this device to wake the computer" grayed out

If I go into an Administrator command prompt, I get the following:

  • powercfg /devicequery wake_armed: NONE
  • powercfg /devicequery wake_programmable: Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller
  • powercfg /devicequery wake_from_any:
    • Dell Wireless 1703 802.11b/g/n (2.4GHz)
    • Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller
    • UMBus Enumerator
    • Logitech HID-compliant Unifying device
    • Logitech Driver Interface
    • Logitech HID-compliant Unifying device (001)
    • ACPI Lid
    • UMBus Enumerator (001)
    • Intel(R) Management Engine Interface
    • Intel(R) 7 Series/C216 Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 1 - 1E10
    • UMBus Enumerator (002)
    • Logitech HID-compliant Unifying Mouse
    • Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter
    • Logitech Driver Interface (001)
    • HID-compliant device (009)
    • Remote Desktop USB Hub
    • HID-compliant device (010)
  • powercfg /deviceenablewake "Logitech HID-compliant Unifying device": You do not have permission to enable or disable device wake.
  • powercfg /deviceenablewake "USB Root Hub": You do not have permission to enable or disable device wake.
From what I've been able to find online, I should be able to enable "Allow this device to wake the computer" in the Power Management tab of various devices in Device Manager, especially the USB Root Hub devices, and possibly the Logitech USB and Microsoft keyboard devices. I assume if I can get that enabled, things might work as expected.
Is this a known issue, and can anything be done to resolve it?

I'm having the same problem with my Inspiron 15R. It will not wake with USB keyboard/mouse input if the lid is closed. I've tried updating the BIOS to the latest version (A08) and enabling Wake with USB there. I've also tried installing all the latest drivers from Dell. No matter what I do, it won't resume from sleep (i.e. wake up) with USB keyboard/mouse input if the lid is closed. It does resume correctly with USB keyboard/mouse input if the lid is open, so everything is configured correctly to make it capable of waking.

The only workaround I've found is to configure the power options to never put it to sleep when on AC power, but that seems wasteful and will also shorten the life of the machine.

This is a huge pain since this machine spends most of its time closed on a shelf on a monitor stand and plugged in to an HDMI monitor. (This makes it difficult to open the lid.)

Very disappointed, Dell!

And me too with my Inspiron 5000 15 (5547)

Your description reflects exactly my situation and the workaround step.

To save myself some typing, I hope you don't mind if I cut and paste your words when I am talking/chatting to Dell support.

I am also having same problem. Why isn't dell responding to these numerous post about this issue?

I think that this is a bigger problem for Dell than at first appears. Meaning that it has been around for quite some time and is probably across their entire laptop range and that they will therefore need "lots" of bios upgrades to get out of it.

Dell support has been in regular contact with me and a resolution has been proposed by Dell. Did you "formally" log a service ticket with them? Did you let them know that the system is not of  "merchantable" quality and that dell has certain obligations here?

I live in Australia where consumer protection laws actually protect the consumer.

cheers (?)

Hey fellas,

I just ran into the exact same problem but check this out...

EVEN THOUGH MY WAKE BUTTON ON THE USB HUB IS GRAYED OUT my system wakes up ANYWAY when I press a button on the usb keyboard.  Here's the thing - this only works when you are plugged into the wall. IF YOU ARE USING BATTERY POWER THIS WILL NOT WORK.
