Inspiron 1520 - Intel Storage Driver Update for AHCI
I reloaded Windows XP on an Inspiron 1520 and would like to update the Intel Matrix Storage Drivers to support AHCI.
I recently did this on different laptop, an Inspiron 1545, and it worked beautifully - by following the steps here: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/p/19289400/19534993.aspx. I used these same instructions as a general guide to do the same on this Inspiron 1520 (using the drivers respective to that system, of course!) and, well, I just finished reloading WinXP for the 2nd time!
I *think* things went wrong when it came to 'select a device from a list, choose the one that mentions "ICH(8)M" - I picked the top one (I didn't think to write down exactly what it said....) and after that I couldn't boot into Windows. Does anyone happen to have the step-by-step instructions (preferably as wonderfully written as those in the link above) on how to install the Intel Matrix Storage Drivers for the Inspiron 1520?
Oh, and yes, I called tech support on this. After I FINALLY got the level 1 tech to accept the fact that she was learning to write her A, B, Cs while I was attempting to compose a sonnet she finally transferred me to level 2 and I got disconnected in the process. Shocker. That brings me to the forum here!
So here's the scoop. In Device Manager it is listed as:
IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
-- Intel(R) ICH8M 3 port Seiral ATA Storage Controller - 2828
-- Intel(R) ICH8M Ultra ATA Storage Controller - 2850
-- Primary IDE Channel
-- Primary IDE Channel
I downloaded & extracted R154200. I did a manual update of the driver but it lists so many & non 'match up'. Help! And THANKS in advance!!

It looks like you have the correct driver. Did you go back into the BIOS and turn AHCI back on?
