Thanks for your reply I am getting really confused now. I have been on Dells UK website and they are selling 2 batteries for the Inspiron 1545. They don´t seem to have the 6 cell like the ones you have pointed out in the above links
One is a 9 cell the other a 4 cell. The thing that is confusing me is that the 4 cell says it has a capacity of 28wh. However the error message I get in windows with the non-recommended battery is. “Please insert a Dell 56wh battery or higher for best system operation”
Does this mean the 4 cell battery has insufficient capacity or am I totally getting it wrong?
I had the identical issue/message re this message during POST of a DELL 1545:
"WARNING: The battery is non-recommended battery. The system will be unable to charge the battery."
I'm very familiar with everything about DELL 1545 (LOL) but I was not aware that there are 2 different voltage levels available. Replacing the 14.8 V one with a 11.1 v unit solved the issue. Ironically the DELL POST message is telling you exactly what the problem is! I have not tried this but I assume that if you went to the DELL website using the Service Tag (bottom of the unit) there would be reference to the battery voltage level/model number.
FYI: this motherboard has a non standard heat sink as well - it is much longer than the norm, perhaps they're related.

You want the 9 cell; it should be an RU-583. The 4 cell units are usually for the netbook series.
