Inspiron 1545 wont boot

Hope someone can help. I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 that doesn't boot successfully. It gets to the screen indicating "Starting WIndows" and then just sits there. I tried safe booting but when it should be displaying windows files that are loading, the screen just stays blank. I tried selecting "Repair" boot but the system just blinks and returns to the window that asks me to select Repair or Normal Boot. (If I select Normal Boot, it gets to "Starting Windows" and that's it.

I checked out the hard drive externally and it appears the hardware is functioning normally. I successfully booted with Hiren's Boot CD. I would like to attempt a RECOVERY but can't get beyond the Repair screen.

Since Dell doesn't provide an OS disk with the computer that would allow me to reinstall Windows 7, I'm at a loss for what else to try so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi gestler,

Thank you for providing the update. I sincerely apologize for the technical troubles you have experienced with your Dell computer.

Let’s try few more troubleshooting steps.

Step 1: Below are the steps for last good configuration.

Boot to the Last Known-Good Configuration

  1. Power on the system.
  2. Press when the message For troubleshooting and advanced startup options for Windows, press F8 appears.
  3. Choose Last Known-Good Configuration.

Step 2: Use System Restore to Revert to a Previous State.

  1. Restart the computer.
  2. Tap during startup until the Windows Advanced Options menu appears.
  3. Press until Repair Your Computer is highlighted, and then press .
  4. In the System Recovery Options window, click to select your language, and then click Next.
  5. Log in as a user with administrative rights, and click OK.
  6. From the Choose a recovery tool menu, click System Restore.
  7. In the System Restore window, click Next.
  8. Click the Show restore points older than 5 days checkbox for a complete listing of restore points.
  9. Click to select a restore point.
  10. Click Next and then click Finish.
  11. Click Yes in the confirmation window.
  12. Click Restart after system restore successfully completes.
  13. If you encounter any error messages during the restore process, follow the on-screen instructions to correct the error.

Step 3: Run Diagnostics.

Restart the computer by holding the FN and the power button simultaneously and let the diagnostics complete. This would isolate if its hardware or software issue.

Awaiting your response!

Thank you for the quick response, Rajesh.

Step 1. I chose Last Known Good Configuration. The words "Starting Windows" appear on the screen but it goes no further.

Step 2. I succeed through item 3 but then get a screen indicating "Windows Error Recovery" offering the choice of "Launch Startup Repair (Recommended)" or "Start Windows Normally". If I launch startup repair, the screen blinks but then returns to the Windows Error Recovery screen. If I choose a normal start, the screen changes to display the word, "Starting Windows" but either goes no further or, after an extended wait, again brings up the WIndows Error Recovery screen.

Step 3. Ran the diagnostics and no problems found.

Having gotten no further input, I tried placing a different hard drive in the computer and it booted so I know the laptop's hardware is okay. SO I put the original hard drive back in, booted with Hiren's Boot Disk, opened Disk Management, and discovered that the original laptop was assigned as drive G and the recovery partition as drive F. I changed those to C and F, respectively, but it still wont boot.

You will need a Windows 7 boot DVD (first link).  Then restore the boot sector (second link).

Thank you. ejn63. I do have a Windows 7 boot disk but when I click on repair, the screen goes to the generic Windows 7 blue background, contrails and a bird by a leaf. Then it stops there. I can move the cursor but don't have any selections to make. If I click Escape, I get a dialog telling me, "To install Windows, you must run Windows installation. If you cancel the installation, your computer might restart. Are you sure you want to cancel Windows installation?"

Clicking "yes" makes the dialog disappear and all I have once again is a screen containing the generic Windows 7 background again.

Regards,
