Inspiron 15r special edition maximum memory question

Hello,

I've purchased the laptop computer described on this thread after chatting with a Dell representative on the Brazilian site. He assured me the computer's memory could be upgrade to 12GiB of RAM. Its chipset is a HM77 and its processor is the i7 3612QM, both are capable of handling more than 8 GiB of RAM.

Will this laptop recognize amounts of RAM higher than 8GiB?

There was a previous post about  this issue (installing 16gb of ram in the 15r se) Dell does not recomend it but a privious post confirmed that it is indeed possible . the post even showed a screen shot utilizing cpu-z to verify that  indeed 16gb was fully reconized and addressable in the 15r se. the type and mfgr  of the utilized ram was  corsair vengance ddr3-pc3- 12800  (8gb x 2)   in the post it made special mention that it was the type of ram that auto adjusted the cl....I dont know the exact pn but will look for  old post to verify the exact  pn used.   This post also stated that you must have  OS ----windows 7 home delux or greater   64 bit. inorder for 16gb to be fuly reconized and addressable and to run @ stated speed (1600mhz)   hope this helps....   Good luck

Hi

I apologize for the inconvenience but I would like to inform you that, the maximum memory this motherboard support is up to 8GB.  You can also check system specification for this model by clicking the below mentioned link and click on specification .

Guys,

Thanks for your time replying to this.

The memory I am aiming is the Corsair Vengeance with the specs MAC II offered. I have searched a bit more and found the post you mentioned. On the post I found the part number of the memory described there is the same of the one I want, I haven't been able to find the post again - forgot the search criteria.

I'll buy the memory and if it doesn't work I'll just sell it...

Hi

I have a 15R which I am using for film editing , maxxed it out at 8 gigs, would like to try for 16 gigs RAM as this would make a big difference under some circumstances. Did your upgrade to 16 gigs RAM work ? what did you use Corsair , model /specs ?

Thanks

Mike

Hi, Mike,

The memory upgrade works perfectly. The memory I used is the Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 1600MHz (PC3 12800), part number CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10.

I also changed the original 32Gb mSATA card with a 256Gb one. It was a bit tricky to swap it, for I had to disassemble the entire computer, but the extra space and speed more than paid off!

If you're just going to upgrade the memory, don't think twice! But, since you're going to open your notebook and you can reinstall everything, consider also upgrading the mSATA card and/or HDD disk.

Cheers,

Thanks

No I don't have the 15R , its the Inspiron N5110. With the mSata card , maybe I can get one ?, but I think your model was custom made to fit this ?. Regarding SSD's What I was thinking of doing with a caddy to fit in the CD bay , install a SSD drive in that .Need to do more research as to the mSata card I think.

Anyway, easy to do the RAM upgrade , did you go for Windows 8 as well as I hear it can speed up boot times , although my problem is probably more stuff thats loading at startup time !.

Cheers

Mike

Hey, Mike,

I haven't upgraded yet to the Windows 8, and frankly I don't know if I will. I have used it a while and didn't like it so much. But still maybe I'll upgrade.

My system boots in under 16 seconds as it is, I guess it's fast enough... :)

Cheers,

Hi gtludwig,

I have the above mentioned laptop Dell Inspiron 15R Windows 7 Premium,

Processor Intel (R) Core (TM) i3 cpu, M 370 @ 2.40 GHz 2.39 GHz

RAM: 3.00 GB of RAM installed.

64-bit operating system

Intel(R) HM57 Express Chipset LPC Interface Controller - 3B0B

Can you please confirm if the above mentioned memory Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 1600MHz (PC3 12800), part number CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10.

Will this work on my laptop? I notice my laptop has a different chipset and processor although it has got Windows 7 Premium and it is a 64 bit operating system will the 16GB still work? if not what is the most amount of RAM I can use on my laptop.

Thanks a lot for your help

Best Wishes

Hi Savio,

The memory I got for my computer is the same you mentioned (Corsair Vengeance part number CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10). Honestly, I cannot confirm whether this memory upgrade will work for you or not. When I upgraded my laptop's memory, I felt uneasy right up to finding a video on Youtube! where there the same laptop as mine had the same memory upgrade.

I live in Brazil and have searched for this memory on some e-commerce sites and reassured myself that if the memory would not work I could always sell it online with some profit. I ended up getting the memory on e-Bay alongside the mSATA upgrade, so all in all it was a great deal.

Sorry I can't help much here.

Hope all works out nicely for you.
