Inspiron 1720 problems!
Hi guys,
yesterday i attempted to reset my laptop to factory settings by running the 32 bit vista reinstallation disk.
the hard drives were re-formated to remove all the rubbish i had on there, being it was just full of useless data, however once the installation came to the "completing installation" stage, it froze for a few hours and the finally finished.
when the computer restarted, all i could see was a black screen and a mouse which i could move but nothing would happen. so im not exactly sure what happened???
i had a black screen before and just a mouse, ended up my hard drive had died and i had to get a replacement. however i dont think that this is this case this time.
could somebody please provide me with instructions on what to do??
cheers.

Hi,
Welcome to the Community. Press the F12 Key at the Dell Logo on startup, select Diagnostics and run an extended diagnostics on your hard drive. If the diagnostic partition is not available then put in the drivers and utilities disc, and boot off the disc by press the F12 key at the Dell Logo, select CD/DVD and press enter, and then run the diagnostics on your hard drive. Post back with any error codes.
Thank you.

the diagnostics finished. no error codes were found :S
is there any way i can use my reinstallation of windows vista 32 bit cd to reinstall windows, without having the same problem as before?
or is there any otherway to just clear my entire hard drive and start with factory settings again?

i have tried this, however once the installation is complete and the menu for selecting a username and password is meant to appear, my screen goes blank. i left it over night and it was stil black, so it isnt a matter of waiting, but more of a problem with the computer?

Hi,
If the diagnostics pass, then use the below link to manually install windows. Just create one partition for the OS, and remove the others.
support.dell.com/.../document
Thank you.

Hi,
Since we did not get any errors when running diagnostics, this is the only option. You may want to try installing windows with just 1 memory stick to see if that helps. I understand you have already tried it, but we are running out of options, either replace the hard drive or reinstall windows.
Thank you.
