The quote you gave is for the 2650, not the 2600. Despite the slight difference in model number, they're very different systems. The 2650 is a Pentium 4 system. The 2600 is an older, Pentium 3 system. Yes, I know the text mentions 2600 - but the link is for a 2650

The 2640 (P4) will take a full gig (2X512). The 2600 (P3) will not. The limit is indeed 512M.

The quote I gave you would appear to contradict that. Why would the 2600 not take 2x512 modules?

There are some who reported getting 1G to work in a 2650. The 2600, I've seen a few try - and fail.
