Inspiron 2600. Memory limit?

What is the real memory limit on the Inspiron 2600? I ask because on looking how to get at the memory module under the keyboard, I came across this: http://chrisjhughes.blogspot.com/2006/01/how-to-disassemble-dell-inspiron-2650.html 'Great tear down description!!I was just given a fully functional 2600 and gave it to my girlfriend to use as a word processor/internet browser. Crucial.com says it has a 512MB RAM stick in the user access slot and a 128MB in the one under the keyboard. I also opened it to verify. Crucial and Dell both say 512MB is the max that can be installed. It seems to be working fine with 640MB. I also went to 'control panel, system' and it is recognizing 640MB. Could it handle two 512MB sticks? What dictates how much RAM can be used? The processor is an Intel Celeron 1.2GHz running XPhome. The 2640 (P4) will take a full gig (2X512).  The 2600 (P3) will not.  The limit is indeed 512M.

The quote I gave you would appear to contradict that. Why would the 2600 not take 2x512 modules? S

The quote you gave is for the 2650, not the 2600. Despite the slight difference in model number, they're very different systems. The 2650 is a Pentium 4 system. The 2600 is an older, Pentium 3 system. Yes, I know the text mentions 2600 - but the link is for a 2650

There are some who reported getting 1G to work in a 2650. The 2600, I've seen a few try - and fail.
