Go to www.crucial.com for the answer and to order guaranteed to work memory. How to install it is in your Service Manual at Dell Support.

The Inspiron 2650 only has one user acessable memory module socket.  Access to this socket to install additional memory is detailed here:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins2600/en/sm_en/upgrades.htm#999869
The system takes very generic pc2700 type memory modules, and the one socket can take one of a maximum size of 256mb giving you a system total of 384mb.
You can buy the module from crucial.com for $22.98 plus tax ($18.99 plus 3.99 shipping, plus your local sales tax) as suggested or you can buy it here for $15.98 (12.99 plus 2.99 shipping, no tax collected for most states).

if you wanted to, you could purchase two of these modules and use the other to upgrade the standard memory module found deeper inside of the machine.  this would get you to the maximum system memory that the machine will address, 512mb.  The problem is that it is much more work to gain access to the other memory socket.  you would have to remove the keyboard and then remove a protective panel to gain access to the other memory socket... but once that is done you will see another memory socket that is identical to the one on the bottom of the system.. this one will have the 128mb that came with your system.  you remove that module and insert the new 256mb module in its place.
to remove the keyboard...

to remove the emi shield...

viola, the other memory socket will be in view...

remember, remove the ac cord, then remove the battery, and hold down the power button for ten seconds to discharge any residual power held in the system before you attempt any of the above operations.

The system has two RAM sockets - one is under the keyboard and the other more accessible under a door at the bottom of the system.  Each will take up to a 256M PC2100 soDIMM, for a total max of 512 M RAM.
