Inspiron 9300 Screen Resolution

Just got my fully decked-out 9300 with an Nvidia GeForce 6800 card, Pentium M 2GHz, 1GB memory... it's great, but I'm having problems getting the screen resolution as high as I want it.

My previous laptop was an Inspiron 8200 which was also nice, and I had it at the max resolution setting of 1600 x 1200. I guess I was expecting this screen to be something close to 1200 pixels tall, and then naturally much wider... but in Control Panel -> Display -> Settings the highest option available to me is 1440 x 900. I have a WS XGA+, which according to this site http://news.designtechnica.com/print_featured_article6.html should be able to go to 1680 x 1050, which I'd be perfectly happy with. But as an amateur graphic artist, I really need the space.

When I first started the computer all the images look terrible. I quickly figured out the dpi was at 120 or something ridiculous, so I changed it down to 96, which made it fine for what the resolution is. But how can I get the resolution higher?

17 inch Wide-Aspect UltraSharpTM TFT Active Matrix display in a choice of WXGA+ (1440x900) or WUXGA with TrueLifeTM (1920x1200)

Specs are from Dell order site.
