I am just starting to research upgrading these systems and have not done it yet.

You can find the same drive at tigerdirect for $95 plus many others.

That drive will not work.

You need a half mini pcie SSD card if you want it to fit into the hard drive slot with no other modifications.  These cards are 50mm in length.  If you're willing to modify the mini9 chassis, you can fit a 70mm card.

The most popular 50mm cards that work are:

  1. The Dell SSD devices from STEC
  2. The fast yet expensive RunCore drives
  3. The SuperTalent drives
  4. The incredibly slow Crucial drives

I just completed putting in a 16g ssd.  It works great  I used fat32 as that is faster.  I found a friend who said the 32g ssd is too slow but might work ok on fat32. I also put the 2g ram in also plus some video stuff and now my unit plays HD tv without jumps and bumps from my local tv stations.  I believe a fast 32g will be out soon maybe it is already..  Gary

I'm a bit new to all this but am wanting to achieve what you have done.  I've got the 8G sshd with 1G ram and the BBC iPlayer goes out of sync.  Does switching to a 16G sshd make a difference to this process?  Is switching the file system to FAT32 is an easy task?  What video mods have you done?

Thanks

Hi all, I just recently purchased a 32 gb Super Talent SSD for my mini 910 off of ebay, since Dell was less than helpfull now that these are discontinued. Dell has been great to work with up until now for me. I contacted them to try and order a bigger SSD and they said they would need to get back with me. Never heard back. I got back ahold of them only to discover that they  were not able to get any at this time. So I told them I would just like to return the laptop after having it less than a month, but just over the alotted return time, thanks to them never getting back ahold of me. Nice little stunt they pulled.

In any case, once I receive the hard drive and get it in, I will let you know how it works. I still plan on using Ubuntu, because I would like to learn my way around the OS. I spoke to someone that installed the same harddrive on the 910 and installed Windows 7 and they said it works great. But yeah, with the 910's bare minimum and having Ubuntu a smaller OS just dont cut it after its first update. All my space was ate up. They should of started these things out with at least 8 gb.

Hey Everybody,

I just wanted to get back to you. I installed the Super Talent 32gb SSD with no problems. I had some issues reinstalling Ubuntu, but got it done. I just ended up putting Ubuntu 9.10 as well. Everthing seems to be working great. I believe there may even be some bigger SSD's available for Dell mini 9, but not sure. The computer is actually usable now and looking forward to learning my way around Ubuntu some more. But after this, I think it is goodbye to Dell.

I just wanted to add my bad experience with Dell concerning a new SSD for my Inspiron Mini 9. AFter entering my service tag correctly, Dell chose three external and two internal hard drives for me. The internal drive will NEVER FIT - I received it today, tried to install - it was laughable . . . they don't support their own products correctly. This is the end of my dealings with Dell. I suffer for their mistake. Never again.

I (having heard many horror stories about dell Support) went the independent route purchasing a Super Talent 32 GB SSD, and a 2Gb  Samsung Ram Memory board both of which were purchased from Super Biiz  and were very simple and easy to install. After that I purchased a Microsoft Windows XP Professional service pack 3 from a five star merchant on e bay. This software installed correctly but I lacked the drivers and utilities disk necessary to make my Dell Mini 910 functional.

Twice I called dell customer support and provided the middle eastern consultant with my netbook's service tag number and both times this company man representative gave me the tired line ""We can't help you unless you can give us the name and personal information of the original registered owner". There is no way I can trace my netbook to this person or company being that I purchased this Dell Mini 9 perhaps second or third hand from a local retailer. I can understand Dell's policy concerning the availability of the operating system for these units most of which have burned out solid state drives at this stage of life. But denying a Dell owner the drivers and utilities disks needed in an SSD replacement is in my opinion nothing less than criminal, especially when I offered to pay for the drivers disk plus postage and handling. It seems Dell doesn't care about what becomes of it's products once they have made their profit off the initial sale and the buyer's check has cleared. If Dell continues to deny their customers so much as this basic  support they are going to be responsible for millions of Dell Computers landing on the curb sides of the world.

My guess is Dell does not care about the reputation of their products and their name. No wonder so many people are abandoning this company and buying Acers instead!

I own two of these Dell Mini 910s and since I can't get any measure of reasonable respect or service from this company I'm putting both of these netbooks up for sale on e bay so some computer hobbyist can turn them into Hackintosh netbooks which run on Apple OS Systems. Dell Does Not Back Up It's Products!

It actually, does - to registered owners.  So does Acer.

If you buy a secondhand system from any manufacturer, don't expect much in the way of support.  If you think Acer will treat a secondhand system any differently, you're in for an unpleasant surprise if the same situation arises.

When I replaced the drive in my Dell 910, I reloaded it with Ubuntu linux...  I love it...  There are tons of threads available that deal with the subject...  You may want to give it a try...

Cars aren't comparable to computers - cars in most states have titles, and must be titled and registered to owners.  Given the safety stakes, manufacturers must be able to communicate with owners.

Dell doesn't disallow transferring ownership - they allow it.  You simply have the registered owner transfer ownership.  Given that the value of the data on a stolen or lost notebook can easily exceed the cost of the hardware, it's a nice security feature knowing there's a measure of protection (assuming the system is password protected at the hard drive level).  That measure of security doesn't exist with most other brands.

Your gripes aren't well founded - you bought a used system without knowing where it came from.  Yes, Dell's policy is inconvenient in that case - but it's you who failed to check on things before you purchased.

Well, by the quickness of your response defending Dell's communist policies concerning maintaining tight fisted control over who they can allow permission to keep equipment manufactured by them functional for years instead of being forced to discard otherwise perfectly repairable hardware it's apparent to me you work for Dell in it's propaganda department monitoring this Dell owned forum. With regard to that realization I will leave you to to remain comfortably employed in your chosen profession.

And I'll leave you comfortably self-assured in your near-total ignorance.
