Inspiron N5010 Motherboard/Chip level replacement.
I have a Dell N5010 with 1GB Radeon 550v graphics, which is a well known model(family) with heating issues. Recently I had noticed few artifacts whenever I play videos or use applications that use GPU and they started increasing overtime. Yesterday I fired up dell video diagnostics a couple of times and my laptop died. Now on starting it gives 8 beeps at regular intervals and it fails to start. I have confirmed that it is my GPU which got damaged rather than a problem with the LCD by connecting to an external monitor.
I called up Dell representatives today and got a price of 11000 INR quoted for the repair, which I think is on the higher side. Does Dell provide chip level replacement for only the GPU to reduce the costs? Have others facing similar problems found some alternatives, in or around Mumbai?
@#iworkfordell: Can someone provide an simple explanation on what the repair covers? Are there any hidden costs above the quoted price viz. transportation, part prices, etc. The quote has terms like "Golden part replacement required" which I was not able to understand. The quote also mentions that for 17999 INR, we get "1 Year In-Home Hardware Services after Remote Diagnosis + Premium Phone Support", is it equivalent to 1 year of warranty extension + the current repair?

Also I hope @#iworkfordell will agree that this model has a lot of heating issues. Has new motherboard layouts or redesigned heatsinks available now for replacement? I am sure even after a repair is done with the old components the heating issue will remain. My battery also screwed up due to high temperature.

You can easily find replacement boards for $150US or so on EBay -- less than it'll cost you to have a shop replace the chip. No major PC supplier does board-level repairs.

@ejn63: Thanks for the suggestion. It is kind of difficult for parts to be sourced from outside India. Getting customs clearances and import charges add up to the difficulty. In the end the conversion rate of 1 USD ~ 65 INR + import levies add up to the same or more than the amount quoted be Dell India.

It is unfortunate that no one from Dell replied to this thread specifically on issues which only they could have answered. I finally placed an order for one time repair worth 11000 INR and got a delivery time of 2 weeks; which I think is again on the higher side. Do not know if they have to ship components from outside India. I got an assurance from the representative that all the heat related issues will also be resolved but did not receive a concrete reply on what changes to layout or heatsink has been made.
Frankly I appreciate Dell on the quality of after sales service they provide but they should have stopped these defective models once the problems were known or may be provide parts replacement. I have a few Dell models running for more than 5 years without a problem. I will update this thread after the repairs are done.

Yes, it is working fine now. They replaced many unrelated parts viz. the LCD Panel, etc. and that seems to be a reason why they charge so high.
While the service engineer was here, I kept on insisting him that my GPU chip got fried and gave him reasons for my conclusion but he took his own sweet time fiddling with the LCD cables, etc. and finally reached the same conclusion. It seems they are not experts as they are expected to be and Dell seems to be hiding this by bundling replacement of all parts together so that a detailed diagnosis is not required. Thus customer end up paying higher and they too have less work to do.
On a side note, I have since been pumping out dust from the vents every now and then. I also removed the plastic nets from the bottom vents. This will help me avoid the problem for sometime to come but this model is still prone to heat related issues. All of my friends who bought this model are also facing the same issues.

Heyy I'm also facing the same problem. The dell representative quoted me 11000 for changing the motherboard. He also told me that the motherboard will be refurbished (used).
I wanted to know that your motherboard is working properly? What about the heat issues? Is it worth 11000??
