Inspiron N5010 (R15) Cannot remove keyboard.Please help?

Hello people. I have an Inspiron n5010 on which the hard disk has failed. I have no real idea why it is necessary to do so, but to access and replace the hard disk it is necessary to remove the keyboard. I am PC savvy (qualified at degree level in Computer Sciences) enough for this not to be of any issue..NORMALLY...

But as the subject suggests, I am damned if I can remove the keyboard..I have followed the dissasembly manual to the hilt.Removed all screws/optical drives/memory etc..Yet where in the manual and on the online videos there is a screw near to the RAM modules that holds the keyboard to the base, this model has none..And after releasing the catches on the keyboard, its still stuck..

Please Please can someone throw some light on this for me?I need this machine back PDQ

Hi,

Welcome to the Community. Yes there is a screw that you need to remove at base. Use the below link to removed the keyboard for your system.

Thanks for your response.Sadly I have tried using that documentation already, and that screw to the above right of the memory modules is the one that is not there on this model. I can enclose a photo of th back of the machine if you wish. I am pulling my hair out on this issue. I have followed all instructions to the hilt, and watched endless youtube videos about this and they all lead to the same thing-remove the screw...THERE ISN'T ONE!!

The manual is wrong. There are 2 Screws holding the keyboard on.

Removing the Keyboard

  1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.

  2. Remove the battery (see Removing the Battery).



  3. Remove the base cover (see Removing the Base Cover).

  4. Remove the screw that secures the keyboard to the computer base.

 NOTE: The screw that secures the keyboard to the computer base may not be present in all computers.
  1. Turn the computer over and open the display as far as possible.

 CAUTION: The keycaps on the keyboard are fragile, easily dislodged, and time-consuming to replace. Be careful when removing and handling the keyboard.
  1. Press the keyboard and slide it towards the bottom as far as possible.

  2. Slide a plastic scribe between the keyboard and palm rest, and pry and lift the keyboard to disengage it from the tabs on the palm rest.

  1. Ease the keyboard up and slide the six tabs at the bottom of the keyboard out of the slots on the palm rest.

  2. Without pulling hard on the keyboard, turn it over.

  3. Lift the connector latch and pull the pull-tab to disconnect the keyboard cable from the connector on the system board.

  4. Lift the keyboard off the computer.

I just PM'd you but then I found the answer.  Dell have 'helpfully' used a pad of super strength adhesive to secure the keyboard to the chassis.  Good luck with getting the keyboard out without breaking it.  I suggest a spatular and a bit of patience.

I fig it out, Stupid Dell double stick taped the keyboard to the metal shield, I had to use a wooden paint stir stick to pry the keyboard off the metal.. I hope this helps..

I wanted to confirm that the only way to get the keyboard off is to pry it off due to the adhesive. One of the posts said there were definitely screws but not in the place where the manual says it is. The keyboard seems to be stuck around the f5 f6 key after the tabs are released (which is where the imaginary screw  should be that really isn't there) and appears more like a screw than adhesive holding it in place, . Suggestions besides pry it out with a spatula?

SpeedStep had the answer, unfortunately too late, my keyboard was destroyed by the time I figured out the manual was wrong.  Mine had two screws.

In my case there was no screw(s). There was two adhesive tapes.

You are right there is no screw or screw hole!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Did you ever solve this problem, because I have the same problem.  I thought about taking careful measurements form the pictures and very carefully drilling a hole. But as far as I can see there is still nothing  under that spot??????????  What is holding the key board down???????????
