Hi Rich L,

It seems that the system is going to sleep automatically when used for a few minutes. Please check the power option settings on the system by following the steps below.

  • Click on Start > Control Panel > Power options.
  • Choose Preffered plan as Balanced and click on change advanced settings.
  • Change the " Put the computer to sleep option" to Never or a time period of your choice (check the picture below)
  • Click on save changes.
Please check if this resolves the issue. If you are still facing the issues please share the following information so that I can help you further.
  • Status of the power button light when the system goes to sleep.
  • After how much time is this issue reoccurring?
  • Are you using any specific program or application when the issue occurs.
Hope this helps. Please reply for any further assistance.

Hi Abhishek

Thanks for the reply.

I previously tried adjusting all the power settings to 'never'.  Made no difference.  Still set to never now.

The power button is not lit when it goes off.

It seems to happen completely randomly throughout the day, no pattern.

It's not connected to using any particular application.

As I say, after about 10 times logging back in, it will stay on. After logging in it takes me to the same place I left off.

The fan seems to be working.  It's used on a table.

BTW, rebooting stops the need to log in 10 times - but same thing happens later.

Windows 7, SP1.

Thanks for your help.

Rich

By the way, my last mail is more accurate (I thought it was only in the mornings but it's all day).  It's my Wife's laptop.

Thanks

Hi Rich L,

Thank you for your reply.

I recommend you to keep the system on the BIOS screen and observe if the same issue occurs. Please follow the steps to enter the BIOS screen.

  • Restart the system and tap on the F2 key on the Dell logo
  • Once you enter the BIOS screen wait and observe if the screen goes blank.
If the issue is not occurring on the BIOS screen, I would advise you to download the video driver from the link below:
Open the link and enter the service tag of the system, choose the operating system and install the video driver.
Hope this helps. Do reply with the results.
